Re: check engine light= lots of $$

just buy nates headers and get a tune and you wont have any problems with Cats again..........or do what josh said and cut them out and weld a pipe in place, if its the front one that can be replaced in like 2-3 hours, back one in 4-5 hrs tops........... it only took me 6 hours to remove the entire engine from my car lol

@ sexyg6...how much for the headers? i would love to go any route cheaper than replacing both at once. the only bad thing is that around here, its hard to find anyone to install anything you didnt buy through them...lame i know. so the headers prob wont work out, plus then i have to get a tune for that which i wouldnt know were to go around here for that either unless the exhaust shop could possibly do it which i doubt.

also to everyone else with advice and opinions, my mechanic friend said that if the o2's were bad, the check engine light wouldnt come on or it would blink. he said 95 percent of the time when he replaces cats for people he puts old o2's back in the new cats to save them money and never has any issues. he said the o2's are working cause they are making the check engine light on and i shouldnt replace those either. he siad just to hold off on spending the money for now. if i was going to replace them is there any cheaper alternative to oem parts besides cutting them out all together? @ dan..how much was your high flow cat from magnaflow? my other biggest concern is the cash. if i had that kind of money just laying around to blow i would just suck it up and replace them right now but sadly enough i dont have that kind of cash to spend on repairs at the moment so i would have to borrow some monies. i plan also in the near future on getting new plugs, flushing the coolant system and i need new front wheel stabilizers plus the possibility of new rear shocks so i just as well wait on the cats and do everything at once and get it over with. the car is paid off so i am not going to trade it or get anything different, i want to keep this car. its not that i dont want to stick money into it i just never planned on the worse you know. but..if i am going to borrow a little cash to do it i may as well do everything at once. jmo

Re: check engine light= lots of $$

anyone know a good place to look for qa cheaper cat replacement to the oem one? i have looked online a little bit but i want to make sure if i go that route i can find the right one and that my local muffler shop can get the parts i need for me. again, alot of places here won't touch it unless you order parts through them. still not sure what i want to do but i am going to take a little time while i still can and weigh all my options before i drop 1400 on 2 new oem style cats.

Re: check engine light= lots of $$

wow so in my first post today i think i was way off on something. i think what my friend the mechanic meant was that the o2's prob were not bad that the shop was just going to replace them along with the cats for whatever reason. think even if i did replace the o2's if im not mistaken i would still have the cel on because of a the bad cats correct? so if thats the case im not going to replace the o2's if they dont need to be done. again im just going to bide my time for now and figure out the best plan if attack here and see what plays out with the car and the cats. thanks to all who ar sharing info it means alot to me that people have opinions, info and even storied to share. believe it or not it all helps..lol

Re: check engine light= lots of $$

Hey for the MagnaFLow cat i didn't see any for the 3.6 your engine. looks like there all for the 3.5

but i would just keep driving it till you save up.
And both your cats went bad at the same time? Or are you one of the elite with 3?(if i remeber bam talking about that in the past)
I actually just payed the car off. A week ago. and have so much stuff to finish up to.

But i just take it in steps and talk to as many people i can about getting stuff worked on. I know a welder, a painter, And A gm tech.

So i make sure and bother them as much as possible.

Re: check engine light= lots of $$

i think nate is wanting 900 out of his headers, and a tune with sending yours in will run you about 300........135 more if you get a new ECM so u can keep ur stock one and not be without a car......... as far as i know nobody makes aftermarket highflow "bolt on" cats for any G6............just actual cats that have to be welded in place of the stock ones........ headers and tune should gain you about 35hp/tq or so......

o, and as long as you know how to use a wrench, headers are not hard to put on...........just takes a while......lol

I Tried looking again for the magnaflow ones that where on their site and they no longer have them they only have The HM Grade bolt ons or the California OEM. Either way there gone now LOL

But i agree^^ I would get headers in a heart beat if i had some available besides the OBX

                            rock auto . com

                            about 250 a piece.

I'd still replace the o2's first. Easy enough for you to do it, and cheap enough. And should be done when you replace the cats anyway. and the light blinking when an o2 is bad...............no?

im going to agree with lampoon, there is a limited emissions warranty on ALL 6's until 100k. just look up the paperwork online in a pdf. it will tell you all you need to know.
