Re: check engine light= lots of $$

the emissions warranty on our cars is 80k so i am well over that. they said i was lucky i made it this far and they said i need to address the issue asap so i dont end up on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. as for the kind, i just went with oem. at the time when i was in the shop talking about the parts i wasnt even thinking clearly cause they had just dropped a huge bomb on me with hthe estimated price. i would think high flow would be better though right? i am not sure if they would be any cheaper i guess. they told me it would take them a full day to complete the job so there will be alot of labor in there as well which bites but what do ya do, i don't know how to do it myself and it needs to be done so just fix it and go on down the road i guess. not the kind of mod i was planning on doing, thats for sure. i just hope to hell it drasticly increases my mpg's and she purrs like a kitten cause it better for that kind of cash.

It's not hard to do, you could find a friend who works on cars to do it. Plus I don't think you would end up on the side of the road. Its just emissions

so basicly what your telling me is that..1.) it won't make the car die somewhere if i don't address the issue right away? and 2.) as long as i have someone who knows stuff about cars its not hard to do? my gf's brother and her uncles all work on cars for fun, the only prob is the below freezing temps in iowa this time of year and a place to do it. i would love to save some money on this project though. do you think the cost for what they have to do sound a little to outrageous? its a little over a grand total for parts and labor.

OEM parts are very expensive. And the list price is jacked up like crazy. Add on top of that 70$ an hour and it makes sense why its so high. Its not "easy" but if you know your way around a car its not hard at all. Access is the only problem. All it is, are metal pipes connected with bolts, and some gaskets between them. Not much you could screw up. It takes a lot of work and frustration, but its worth saving the money.

Replace bad o2 sensor, reset check engine light, go back on your way. "IF" the cats were bad you would be losing power and fuel mileage would be going down.

I would check a different shop, I really think this shop is trying to rip you off and get a bunch of extra money out of you.

Cut out cats, weld in pipe, get a tune for catless (no code), replace O2s if needed, Profit???

I just hate seeing people paying shops ridiculous prices to fix stuff. I would also try the o2 first, it wont hurt anything, plus, if you do manage to somehow break the new o2 because of the cat (if thats even possible) then get a new one under warranty

Re: check engine light= lots of $$

i have researched a bit online and it seems like there are alot of other g6 owners out there with the same problems. i was on g6 owners club and there was a thread about it. seems like alot of people think it should have been a recall. anyone know if this is a recall yet or not? the place i take my car to is always good about stuff on my car. everytime i take my car there for anything i tell them to look stuff over and they have not ever told me i need to fix anything that does not need fixed so its hard for me to believe that they are taking me for a ride but who really knows. maybe i will try another place on monday and see what they come up with for the situation. if its not that hard to do, i will just buy a new o2 and replace that myself, reset the code and see what happens. but as of now, no loss in power and no bad gas mileage. i just don't know..this really sucks. i wish i knew more about cars so i could do all this crap myself but i am kinda dumb like that sometimes. i definately want to try replacing the o2 and see what happens after that. my dad has a good friend back were i grew up that has a shop and maybe he can check out the cats for me on monday and see what he thinks.

Catalytic converter failures for the G6 is usually on the 4 cyl models not the models with the v6 in them.

Even if there was a recall I don't think you would qualify for it since you are over 100k. The nothing is meant to last forever on a car and the manufacturure can't just keep replacing parts on cars forever or else they would never make money. A CAT is meant to go bad eventually since it filters emissions from the engine. The O2 sensor may not have failed but could have gotten so much carbon built up on it that it can't get a proper reading.

well i just talked to a friend of mine that is a mechanic at ford. he really is a gm guy but no dealerships in the town i grew up in for him to work at. he said that if the code was a cat efficiency code which it was then the o2 sesor isnt bad it just simply means the cat is bad. also he said if my car isnt running rough or getting bad gas mileage that i should just leave it alone and not fix it at all. he said that is what he would do. his mom has the same code on her car and it has been there for 2 years he said with no further issues so idk, i am so confused right now lol. part of me wants to say f-it and let it go but knowing that eventually i will have to do something about it i am thinking i just as well do it now. he said even if i replace the o2 sesor it wont make the code go away and just to put black tape over the check engine light...lol the other bad thing about it is that it seems as though since the check engine light is on my remote start doesnt want to work and i really love having that this time of year. so i guess i might just see what happens this weekend and maybe i wont be fixing anything just yet.

Re: check engine light= lots of $$

I was in a similar boat as you a couple months ago with ther ear cat going bad. If i where to replace that cat myself i was going to get a Magnaflow high flow cat then install myself. Since they have one for my engine.

But i have a friend who is a Gm mechanic and put it on the Warranty even though i don't have one and i was over miles.
I was there the whole time while he was working on it and When they got it out the "honeycome" ceramic piece inside was loose and bouncing around.

When the new cat went in On the way home i deff. Felt some lost power come back. I just hadn't noticed since the cat really was going bad long before the code was thrown.

Just thought id tell my story.

I still say to do all the o2 sensors anyway. you are over 100k. just replace them and call it a day. they aren't hard to replace, just unscrew it with a special socket. you can always replace the cats later.

plus, what does putting black tape over the cel have to do with anything...its still there....inspections can still read them...(unless you dont have inspections there...)

If you can I would recomend doing the CAT replacement and getting the Highflow CAT. It will make you happier and you wont be sticking tape to your car.

I replace a lot of things on cars all the time just because I feel a slight difference in how the car is acting and it annoys the hell out of me. I replaced the entire exhaust on my last car just for a 1HP gain. bumped it from 99WHP to 100WHP lol.
