so on sunday my check engine light popped up, no big deal. first time since i have had the car its came on. took it to the shop monday morning and they said it threw a code for the catalytic converter. the guy asked if the car ran rough or i had bad gas mileage which, neither one is a factor. so then he said they would just clear it and see if it was a fluke deal or what since nothing lead them to believe i had a bad cat. today its back on, my very first thought when it came on sunday was o2 sensor but idk. i wish i knew more about cars than i did but someday i will learn..lol
anyone have any ideas on what it could be? ill be taking it back tomorrow to see what they say but im just curious if someone has a guess as to what different things it could be. i know its a long shot but i just want an idea of what im up against, plus i dont want to fork over the cash for anything i don't have to like a catalytic converter which i know isnt all too cheap.
    thanks people!

don't go to a shop. go to advance auto or autozone and have them scan it and get the code written on a piece of paper. find out what the code means and post it here. then we can help.

if the codes are P0420 or P0430 your going to need a cat. how many miles on it? cats have an 80k mile warranty

well i am sitting at 104k right now. i was told the code it read...whatever it came up as was for the cat BUT shouldnt thae car run really rough or have bad gas mileage if so? i could be wrong cause i don't know too much here but i assumed you could easily tell if you have a bad cat. my gas mileage yesterday all day with a 50 miles round trip to my parents house was an average of 27mpg which for the winter time here is pretty darn good i think. but who knows, it could be just that and its not leaving any tell tale signs yet.

          Re: check engine light

You don't always get bad gas mileage or have a rough running car because of the cat. It could be that it is on the edge of going out and the sensor picked it up and is warning like it should. The price to replace a cat will vary depending on the shop you take it to. I prefer a local family owned shop where I live since they are generaly cheaper and I still get great quality because they are trying really hard to make a good name for themselves. JMHO

im thinkin its the o2 sesor on the backside of the cat in front of the motor. my and cav were talkin about it and thats his guess so we'll see tomorrow what the shop says this time.

              Re: check engine light

why dont you just get the code and tell us like i said. there are so many different o2/cat codes there could be. plus, you have over 100k so you should replace all your o2 sensors anyway if they havent been yet. I'm thinking of replacing all mine soon and i only have <50k. i'd rather not have one fail, or seize up in the exhaust.

not to mention its also good to find out for yourself. a cat is an easy thing to scare people into fixing. who knows, maybe all the light is for is a small emissions leak??? better to know than to fork over a bunch of cash

                        Re: check engine light

You can try and replace the O2 sensor since that is cheaper and won't hurt anything to replace it anyway. If that doesn't work then you have effectively narrowed it down to the cat.

well thats a good idea, but either way they should be able to figure that part out at the shop. i would think there is a way they can test the o2's. im just hoping for the best but with the cats on our cars having 80k warranty i am sure its very possible that is the deal. i guess we'll see soon enough.

well all, i just got word that my check engine light was triggered by 3 thhings.. both my cats are shot and i have a bad o2 sensor. wouldnt be so bad if they didnt both go out at the same time cause the cost of parts plus all the labor is going to be over 1 grand (gulp)

wow. i have the same issue but i havent done anything about it yet. but you werent under warranty? i read somewhere that some range from 7 up to 10 years, dont know if the G6 only has 80k mile warranty. did you do OEM type or high flow cat? sucks tho that its that expensive.
