  • 08 radio upgrade to a 2006 Pontiac G6

So I have been bouncing back and forth questions with CrusinG6, about radio options. I was debating about either going aftermarket or buy a 08 radio and have GM program it.
When I called a dealership they were not sure if the 08 would work with my car(which I know will since you guys have done it on here). My question is, what will they have to do for the radio, one of the guys from the dealership said that it might take a while because the codes could be different from 06 to 08.

Dealership took 5 minutes to unlock the radio. The only thing is that he didn't program my steering wheel controls properly, but I prefer them this way (I like having a mute button).

The 09.5 radios are different but what's the difference between a 08 and 06?

        08 got an aux input.

OP, I have an 05 with an 08 radio installed. It took them maybe 15 mins to do. I'm sure your dealer can do it too, they just say those things because either 1. they just don't know and/or 2. they are covering their asses in case it doesn't work for some odd reason. That way they can say they told you it might not work.

From what I have read, these radios don't have "codes" like the old theftlock ones. Those radios needed constant power to stay unlocked...disconnect the battery for more than 10 mins and you need a new unlock code. The newer radios that we have work differently. They have the vehicles VIN saved into the radio and every time the car starts it scans that VIN against the VIN stored in the car's computer. If it matches...you're go to go. If it doesn't...locked. So basically the dealer plugs in the Tech2 and unlocks your radio by programming your VIN into the new radio.

Do you have a color printer?
There is a how to that shows the TECH2 (that they use) procedure.

I was the first to actually do this...there is a thread on it.
There are two 08 radios. I suggest getting the one disk. The 6 disk changers break
and you wont need it with an AUX.

Here are the two part numbers:

How does one change the battery without having to unlock the radio every time?

They sell little memory retainer things that you plug into your cigarette lighter.

Or you can use extension leads / jumper cables to hook up a separate battery to the car while you change out the bad one.

I don't know if this helps but I have disconnected my battery several times for about 10 minutes each time and I only had To reprogram my clock.

You either did like below, took it to the dealer and they would just take care if it, did it really fast, or bought a new code.

Yeah, our radios aren't the old theftlock type...

I never had an issue with battery disconnects and the radio. They write in into the BCM coding I think.....thats why they need the tech 2.

Every blue moon someone will have a hicup though. I saw someone on the FB page had to do a key relearn after swapping batteries.
