  • Installed a Transmission Cooler!

Well I installed my trans coolers today.

I went and got two kits from napa. Reason I got two is because of the location I wanted to mount em. I wanted something long but not too wide. And everything else seemed too big. So I went with two smaller ones and just ran em in series.

    Here's my set-up

You can kind of see them through the grill. I didn't mount them straight but that's okay I like how it turned out better anyways. Looks a little more aggressive I think. When you are able to actually see them through the grill haha.

I did make a HOW-TO on it over on the G6OwnersClub.
    ~Clicky~

I unfortunately never was able to measure the trans temp. BUT I did check the coolers themselves using a laser infrared thermometer. Just pointed it at the first cooler, then the second. I saw about a 10-12 degree drop on average just with the car sitting and idling. Fan's didn't kick on yet. So obvious change and with the placement they should get pretty good airflow. They're also in front of each fan so they get good flow when those kick on.

        Re: Installed a Transmission Cooler!

were did you run the hoses from? - like where did they start and finish on the car? - I'll be doing this next weekend once the B&M SuperCooler arrives so a detailed "How-To" would be appreciated otherwise I'll shooting from the hip blindly.

It just seems crazy, everyone on here modifies the suspension, the exhaust, the engine, but you don't see much on the transmission, which is very important for moving our G6's.

[update] bangs head on desk. I'm at the dealership getting the transmission fluid changed and I didn't see the ~Clicky~

          Re: Installed a Transmission Cooler!

I really like the "How-To" on the other forum, let me know how it performs during the week. I'm so doing this mod soon, I think it will greatly improve performance since I normally drive 55 miles to work one way each day, so it's literally a 1 hour drive via I-84 at 65+ mph to work in the morning and then my return trip in the evening. I'm really a sprinted driver, but like you said also after a good hour it feels like it performs differently than when the transmission is cold in the morning.

It just makes sense to take care of the transmission, without it, all these mods we do to our cars wouldn't mean shit if the car doesn't move.

            Re: Installed a Transmission Cooler!

Well I can honestly say after some pretty long drives. City driving included, It definitely makes a worth while difference!
The shifts are always perfect and incredibly smooth no matter how long I've been driving it.

And the torque converter seems to engage way more smoothly and cleanly when accelerating from a stop.

After the car warmed up it seemed to almost jerk a little bit from a stop.

Also with the cooler I feel like my WAMS tune is actually work the way it should now, at least for the trans. It's amazing how much of a difference it made with every day driving!

                  Re: Installed a Transmission Cooler!

I've already ordered the coolers from my local napa, it should be in Tomorrow when I go get them.... your mod inspired me to try it.

With all the 95+ degree weather lately, it's really making my transmission feel like it's spinning the gears through glue, so I hope this helps. Plus Dexron 6 has a freezing point of -30 F, so I feel pretty safe that it won't freeze in the winter.

                    Re: Installed a Transmission Cooler!

Glad to know it won't freeze. But it may still get pretty thick which may slow things down, Some GM transmissions have a safety where it wont even engage into overdrive if the fluid is too cold or thick.

But I'll find out in the winter how that works out. It'll probably just take a little longer to warm up but will eventually get to where it needs to be.

But I am sure you will notice a difference! I definitely do and I love it. Even after a 5 hour drive and then getting stuck in traffic is still shifts and feels so smooth and perfect. haha

Let me know how it works out! And I can help ya out if you have any questions.

do you guys know what the operating temp for our transmission is? also isn't the stacked plate cooler more efficient than tube and fin? good job on the install

stacked plate cooler all the way! Mine runs near 180 when warmed up in for like 15-20min from cold i never seen it past 190 with the cooler now

                          Re: Installed a Transmission Cooler!

No idea of the temps. I do believe the stacked plate cooler is more efficient than the tube and fin, but I didn't want to over-cool the trans. Winters here can be harsh. But I figured running a twin setup of the tube and fin should work just as well.
And in all honesty it works pretty darn great! Definitely one of my more favorite mods!

I still maintain that it's complete worth it! The Dex 6 Fluid loves working at cooler temps! And it's pretty obvious while driving.
