  • Engine noise - Ticking almost like a lifter hitting the head. 2008 Pontiac G6

    Hello,
I have a 2008 Pontiac GXP Coupe V6 3.6 Liter. The car when turning left had a slight noise almost as if bearings were going bad. This went on for about 2 weeks until just last week the motor started to make a loud ticking noise. The noise follows the RPM’s and is loud. I posted a You Tube video that someone else posted and that is exactly how my motor sounds right now. My hope is that some one here has had this exact issue and they know what it is. Any idea will be helpful. I have a mechanic look at it on Monday.

Looks like it comes from engines internals. Like a bearing failure... I ain't sure at all.

Update: Just be case someone else has this issue. It was a spun crank shaft bearing. The noise was a rod knocking. There is only two solutions to this issue, replace motor, or take out motor, remove internals, and replace bad bearing and or any additional damaged parts.

            My $0.02,

When it comes to repairing catastrophic damage (spun bearings, etc), it's best to have a professional automotive machine shop rebuild the engine. This option is cheaper than a new engine from the manufacturer, and should come with a warranty (if not, try another shop). Also, look for the shop that builds for the local race venue (roundy-round, drag, etc).

If you have a spun and damaged bearing, all that particulate matter from the bearing will be spread throughout the engine. Other component failure will follow shortly. Also, why only replace a few things at moderate cost (bearings, gaskets, rings, oil, antifreeze) and still have an old worn engine? Cylinders won't have a fresh cross-hatch for proper fresh ring-seating, bearings not replaced are a question mark, and debris/sludge will likely ruin those things you replace. Get it done by a pro!

Sit and talk to your engine pro. The vast majority LOVE to talk horsepower. If you don't know the difference between a cylinder head and an intake manifold, say so. You'll likely get an impromptu class on the modern combustion engine.

            Hope this helps...rant off
