Hello everyone, new member here, this is my first post.
I am the original owner of an 06 G6 GT coupe with the 3.5 engine. Here at seven years and ~76000 miles my muffler has sprung a leak at the bottom on the outlet side and I will need to replace it in the near future. I was considering installing the Magnaflow cat back system, but am concerned with the noise level or volume that exhaust system will produce in the cabin at highway cruising speeds. I really don't want a drone from the exhaust when driving on the freeway.
But here's my question. I've been under my car recently to assess the exhaust system, and the joint where the cat back is bolted to the intermediate Y pipe is fairly well oxidized. What I would like to know from others who have replaced their cat back exhaust is if that joint is held together with two bolts? On the front side of that joint I cannot quite tell if I am seeing a bolt head, or the end of a staked or welded stud (due to rust). If that joint is held together by two bolts (I'm guessing 6mm diameter) then I would likely cut off the heads with a pneumatic cutting wheel rather than try to remove the nuts on the back side of the flange. But if those are welded or staked studs, then I'm going to have to gamble on removing the nuts and possibly cutting off the studs (if they don't break off) and drilling them out of the flange on the Y pipe so I can reassemble it with a couple short bolts.
Any info from someone who has done this would be appreciated!
