  • Key fob batter replacement?

Hey guys. My primary remote decided to die on my a couple weeks ago and I'm at a loss on how to fix it. I've tried three different batteries after carefully opening up the case. However, I go to test the battery in the remote before I close it up, and there's no power. I thought I might have broken a solder joint on the bottom, so I checked of course and no, everything looked to be OK.

Would it be best to spend the $100 at a dealer to get it reprogrammed, providing it can be reprogrammed if I didn't damage it? The batteries all test OK, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I was told by the shop up my street that I could program the remote using the second remote as it still works. Otherwise I'd be out of luck and would have no choice but to take it to the dealer.

I ran a search here but didn't come up with anything except for how someone managed to lock their fob in the car.....

Any assistance; how-to's that can save me a few bucks would be appreciated in the matter. I'm just at a loss right now on what to do next.

    Re: Key fob batter replacement?

I've got 2 cars(g6+g5) with 2 key fobs each they both have had to be re solder twice up to the point where they just replaced both of the remotes for the G5 under the new car warranty and now the G6 2nd key fob is dead. If you're out of warranty my best advice is to check the price of a new remote(online, ect.) and get it programmed just 1. It sucks but I hope the reliability of these improve.

Your shop is wrong you can't program a new remote using an existing one.

Programming can only be done with a tech2.

I'm going to take a basic approach to try and lend a hand....have you looked at the back of your remote to see the type of battery that is inside??

        Like this.....

this is the back of my key fob, if you've checked the back of your key fob, then go to radio shack, they'll take care of you.

          Re: Key fob batter replacement?

ragingfish - I was able to get a new remote for my Dodge Durango (2000 R/T) and it was able to learn the settings after using both remotes simultaneously (strange, but it did work). I figured the G6 would be the same way, but it is 6 years newer. I should've mentioned that in my original post. Anyway, my ORIGINAL remote for the Dodge still works, and it's used almost everyday.

bambamm - I did get the battery from Circuit City (Canadian Radio Shacks were bought out by this company). The battery tests fine, but perhaps I'll try soldering it on. If that doesn't work, then obviously I'll have no choice but to get a new one. I'll more than likely keep an eye on Ebay for deals, I'm sure it'll be easier and less cash to get two. Then at least I'll have a spare when my second fob dies. I'll add that circuit city staff are great, but this particular store has no management. Needless to say I won't go back.

I don't think I can bugger up the bad remote any farther, so I'll tinker around with it for a bit more.

If the car wasn't as new, I wouldn't even bother locking it; like I do with my '99 Taurus. Both remotes died during the same week last fall. Theft doesn't bother me, as I installed a starter kill switch under the dash. Works great, anyone can try to start it, accessories will come on, but ooops, it just won't start. Anyway, thanks again for the info guys.

Ha. i wish we still had Radio Shack. Much better management! You can have the CC across the street from me...

The CC I went to last fall to get a couple of watch sized batteries for a musical book for the daughter, well, I paid cash, and I paid $10 and he owed me $2.18. So, the associate looked at me and said he has no nickels or pennies left to give me. I said fine, give me two dimes. Then all hell broke loose, the guy turned beat red and shouted that he was going to be short, get fired, etc. I said that's fine, then you can give me one of the $10 back and we can call it a day if you're going to try to blame your cash shortage on me, who's trying to buy a product, versus phoning your manager and telling him/her that they're idiots for not giving you proper change, or you didn't bother to check if you needed anything before they left for the day. Either way, I'm not paying for someone else's mistake. The associate insisted I pay on credit card (LOL) and I said no. Cash, or nothing. He threw two dimes across the counter that they landed under the rack behind me, about three feet away. I grabbed the cash out of the guys hand, threw the battery packages on the floor, 'accidentally' stepped on them, left the mall, walked across the street to the house and phoned their customer service line.

Turns out their customer service isn't much help either. The 'girl' on the phone said that Circuit City in Canada (at least) is under heavy financial stress, and that's why they don't have proper change. LOL

Just thought I'd share that, as it was quite comical.

                  It's not Circuit City.

It's Intertan (the company that owned Radio Shack Canada) rebranded as The Source. They were called The Source by Circuit City when they were owned by Circuit City. They are now owned by Bell Canada. They are strictly The Source now.
