G6 Keys and Remote Programming?

    G6 Keys and Remote Programming?

    Hi all,
    I'm new to this forum and car DIY-ing in general, and I'm new to my 2006 Pontiac G6 GT Hardtop Convertible.

    So I just bought my G6 Convertible a week ago today, and the dealer only gave me 1 set of keys. I want to get a spare set made... However I know the G6 has the transponder key and mine has the 5-button fob with the remote start. I have a locksmith locally that can cut my key, and I *think* I can program it on my own. Is it true that inserting the working key and cycling it to ON and then turning it off and inserting the new key and doing the same thing -- does that program the new key? Also, is there any DIY way to program the fob on the G6, or does it absolutely have to be done at the dealer?

      I know on my 2008 Tahoe, cycling the key in and out with the old one is the correct way. On the Tahoe, there is a function in the DIC when key is on, but truck not started, to do a key fob learn.

        I want to bump this. Last week I bought an '08 G6 and was only given 1 key and 1 FOB. I tried to get spare keys made at Lowe's but they said I needed to head to the dealership because they needed to be programmed. Can anyone verify that you can program a key I buy off amazon and have cut locally using my existing key? Anyone have experience with buying an extra FOB and programming that?

          i bought a new key with the chip off amazon along with 2 fobs. bought all that for $50. took them to the chevy dealer and they only charged me to cut the key which was $25. they programmed the key and fobs for free and only took them 5 minutes to do everything

            Key programming can be done on your own once cut though you should really have ones with the proper resistor built in. The fobs require a special program

              If you want a colored fob you can go to Amazon. Btw most g6s came stock with remote start. I didn't even know mine had one til I got the new fob.

                You can check remote start by going through the menu on the DIC. There is an option to turn it on or off. Mine was off when i bought the car and mine didn't come with fobs. Just one master key.

                  I would love to know how you saw that remote start turn on on your DIC. I never seen that feature to turn on, on mine.

                    Just press the menu button while stationary.
                    If equipped you can turn remote start on our off.

                    If not equipped... WAMS can tune your BCM to add remote start

                      oh! I thought it was in some sub-menu with a name that I would have never thought remote start would be under. nevermind, I was never told I had one when I got the car
