  • Coolant Flush

Alright, so I plan on flushing my coolant tomorrow, but I've run into a minor problem. The owners manual has no directions for this type of job and neither does the ALLDATA program.

I've found two detailed posts on changing the coolant in the LX9, but they are both different methods with no images.

Which method is correct? I'm filling it with Dexcool and I don't want to have that argument. I've read the coolant thread (http://www.g6performance.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=6259) and it barely helped. My reservoir tank is gunky and it's impossible to even read the fill lines from the outside so I plan on cleaning that too.

About how much fluid do you need for a flush?

odds are a gallon of coolant (plus the gallon of water to make teh 50/50) should be enough but personaly i would have 2 gallons on hand to be safe

ALLDATA says 9.9 quarts which is roughly 2.5 gallons.

              Re: Coolant Flush

For best results, flush it with a garden hose, and leave the motor running.

BTW, that was a joke, do not under any circumstances do that.

For reference on the joke, you would need to read a hilarious thread on a mustang forum. I bet Google could find it.

                Good luck with dexcool...

The process is..drain coolant, fill with water and cleaner, start engine, refill....
                wait 15 to 30 mins.
shutdown and wait for the engine to cool.
refill with clean water, start engine, wait 10 to 30 mins. cooldown and drain.
Then add coolant with the proper mix.
Remember to turn on the heater too.

I've been using the garden hose flush method for nearly 20 years now. It works just fine. Its hard to get the volume of water needed to flush it anyother way in a house. When done, drain and re-fill with your 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. Or just buy pre-mixed coolant.

I've bought used engines so full of rusty color crud its taken hours to flush them out, then I'd have to do it again in a week because they were that bad. Eventually they all come clean again.

Yeah. When I read your original post I was like "actually, that doesn't sound like a bad idea...".
