I average (according to the DIC) around 27.5 MPG. Highway driving it's not hard to break 32 MPG. I do tend to reset it every time I fill up, and the average I'm giving here is after 3/4 of a tank of gas is run through. But it's pretty stable after the first 40 or 50 miles anyways. Admiteddly most of my driving is highway, I'm about 17 miles from work and probably 12 of that is on the interstate at 70 MPH.

Oh... And I drive an 06 V6 Sedan. Sunroof open has almost zero effect on mileage, I don't know about windows vs AC, I usually crack the windows down a couple inches, but rarely put them all the way down since I like the sun roof open and can't handle the wind noise. A/C is only on for the first 15 minutes or so of any trip to cool it off inside. I generally don't like breathing A/C air, so even if it's blazing hot and I have to leave it on I have the sunroof open or windows down a bit.

Finally got around to uploading some video. Not quite 46 like before but still 40+ DIC indicated.

Sidenote: Sorry for the clips, my camera only does a fixed recording time for each video setting. Would have spliced them together but my laptop vid card doesn't have vista compatible drivers and I don't have editting software except windows movie maker .

1st of all let me say THAT IT REALLY ANNOYS ME WHEN CARS TAILGATE ME WHEN I'M DRIVING MY TRUCK. It doesn't really matter if you save fuel or not, because when I lock all 18 wheels up your going to slam into my icc bumper and total your car. It's just plain stupid to try and tailgate like that. I mean how poor are you that a few more mpg's is going to make or break it? Ok, now that the trucker in me is done bitching. You will get better mpg when you tailgate a truck. This is because when a truck goes down the road it creates a small low pressure zone behind the trailer. If you stay inside of this zone you will be "sucked" along and have less drag present on your car. Hence, you get better mpg. As for the mythbusters episode, they did their testing on a racetrack at speeds up to 45mph. You have to be going over 55mph at least for aerodynamics to become a factor. The rule that I've always used is that when I'm going faster than 55mph I'll use the a/c. But when I'm going slower than 55mpg I'll put the windows down.

Drafting saves gas period. How much depends on distance traveled. I've drafted a semi before, problem is, if he brakes suddenly, it's too late to stop by the time you know.
BTW, 65 and 52 go to Lafayette, you coming from the east side of Indy?
NE side (castleton/fishers area), went from allisonville rd exit to 865 exit.
I grew up in Lawrence, just south of there . People are always flying down 65. I made that drive to lafayette for 5 1/2 years nearly ever weekend. It's always fun coming back south and getting behind someone from Chi-town that likes to do 85 +. I can't count how many times I was in a line of 4 or 5 cars doing around 90 mph coming down to Indy.

As far as saving on gas by drafting, I don't have the patience to wait behind semi's not to mention they can roll right over something in the road that would totally mess up your car. For me, it's just not worth the risk. Also, my time is worth more to me than the money I would save on gas by drafting something not doing at least 70 on I-65.

Sweet I know Lawrence well, went to high school at LC.

Yeah, I just did this as a demonstration there is no way I could stand going that speed for long. I've noticed the same thing about the Chicago people, they are always flying! Kind of ironic that when I actually go into Illinois everyone is crawling. Another thing I like is unless you are going 85+ the cops won't bother with you.

I drive thru chicago probably 2-3 times a week and I've noticed that the speed limits are more of a suggestion than anything. I've done 65 in a 45 zone and have been nothing more than a traffic impediment. It seems like traffic moves about 90 in the slow lane and about 110 in the fast lane. When I do drive the speed limit I end up having cops pull up next to me and tell me to speed up over the radio, cause I'm holding up traffic.

Dotn know if it was mentioned in this topic yet but they did this on Mythbusters behind a Semi at different distances away and yes drafting does increase your gas mileage.. but I forget which one was the most efficient.
