Re: Newbie!!! I4 to V6 swap?

Should be noted.. the ONLY reason the LLT doesn't 'fit' is do to the intake manifold. Block length is the same.. a transverse mounted tranny would fit.. the DI cylinder head is too long for the G6 throttle body to work as ours is designed. A intake manifold breathing from the opposite side of the engine bay (short ram) would allow for the LLY to fit perfectly. The differences on the LLT and our stock LY7 is only the heads.. nothing more

Also the 2009.5 and 2010 G6's are a completely different beat electronic wise than 2005-2009 G6's. You would need a 3.6L from a 2010 or 2009.5 GXP, if you can find them since there were little produced, most GXP's that are shown as 2009 are not 2009.5's.

Also the 3.6L from the Camaro would not fit for sure. The 3.6L in the G6, The LY7, was modified from all other LY7 engines. If you note, it only makes 251/252hp. The LY7 released at the same time in the CTS, Equinox, and Torrent were all ~270hp. The intake manifold and a few other parts were modified for the G6 so that it would fit under the G6's hood. There simply isn't enough room with the transmission sitting under the engine in a FWD / horizontally mounted engine. CTS was RWD so the tranny could sit back further and the engine can be lower in the engine bay and make hood clearance. In the Traverse / Torrent, it's a SUV so they got tons of space under the hood to fit it since its so high up. This the LP1 from the new Camaro, which is a LY7 with Direct Injection and some other goodies making 312hp, is simular in design to the regular LY7 engine. Most likely would not fit without signifigant modification, and I doubt the G6 LY7 intake manifold would bolt up. Also if you run a 2011+ LP1 engine, the exhaust manifold and headers are one piece. So you'd have to figure that out as well. The 2009-2010's are seperate though, but thats how they got the bump from 303hp in 2009-2010 to 312hp along with tuning changes for 2011+ model years.
Don't think like a Mechanic, think like a HotRodder.

If he buys a V6 drivetrain, harness, and the PCM from a 2010 or similarly equipped model then it'll work just fine. There might be a PCM reflash needed but it'll work all the same.

As for the Camaro engine, yes, it would be more difficult as the specific engine was not an option in G6s but its still possible as long as the block is the same dimensions and has the properly bosses for the transverse mount.

Its not major head-aches. If you can program the PCM, you can make it work. People have been swapping Gen 3/4 motors into cars without canbus, and into cars with canbus. You just need a different set of Tools to do it. CANbus is the new "EFI" of the 80's, its a black art that runs on Mysterious Voodoo. But its really not that difficult, the information is out there. Half of it contributed by Engineers at GM who designed the BUS.

It requires research, but can be done. I'm not recommending the OP do it, as I don't know his skill level. But it can be done. If you use the V6 from the same model year as the destination G6 you can pretty much drop it right in with a PCM flash.

If it's so easy why haven't you done it yet?

Because I have better cars with more potential to spend money on. Like my built lt1, and my saving fund for a c7 in a few years.

I'm a hot rodder at heart. I like to see cool projects and engine swaps. And no matter how much I don't see my g6 as an investment worth modding I don't mind seeing other people doing mods to them. I like pretty much all platforms.

I think you answered why we are giving the answers we are. As much as I love the G6, I don't think it's worth doing something as extreme as this when you can purchase a whole other G6 that built from GM top to bottom to be a V6 for about the same price, if not less if you factor in time/effort.
