  • rigging up a heat shield?

okay, before im labeled a shitbag, hear me out. I'm a broke ass college student and my gf has an intake just sitting here, coupler and all. Granted I can install it now but my concern is the lack of a heat shield. If i dont have one, will it do more harm than good? if so I was figuring out how i could rig one up for practically nothing with no tools (i moved down to my school and dont have shit for tools) Could I use cardboard wrapped in alum foil as a heat shield? or is this a fire hazard waiting to happen

cliffs:need heat shield, wondering if cardboard and alum foil will work as a temp, if not give me cheap solutions kthxbai

lol I personally think cardboard in an engine bay is a hazard just waiting to happen... I've seen some people go w/out a shield but I never heard how well it was and if its equal to a w/ heat shield.

My opinion don't ghetto rig it unless you have a durable material that is also non-flammable

yeah, im kinda thinkin if i pull the resonator out, and put it in with no heat shield that is better than the stock airbox still

Re: rigging up a heat shield?

Fab one up out of .063" aluminum. After you anneal it it will be fairly soft and easy to bend into position. The only time you have to worry about heat soak is when the car is sitting still. At speed there is virtually no effect of heat soak. Also with the temperatures dropping soon you shouldn't have to worry about it. Are you in southern or northern Illinois?

kinda like centralish. im in macomb, at western IL university. I know cooler temps are coming my way so the heatshield thing wont really be an issue within a month or so but still.

Got any pics or dimensions of what you would need for a heat shield? I'm currently in custom chassis and metal fabrication class. No promises but I might be able to make one in class depending on our schedule.

well basically its the same dimensions as your engine bay where the stock air box is cept just one pipe going into it for the intake. i can get some dimensions for you later this week

Is it the 3.6? I'm just curious for mounting brackets etc. I haven't seen how the other engine bays look I'm thinking they all use the same airbox position and mounting points

Ok good that means I can use my car's attachment points probably. Just in case make sure she has these points circled in red. I'm sure she does but so far they seem to be the most viable attachment points. I'm sure you know the drill but basicly I need the outside diameter of the piping and filter dimensions. I'm guessing everything from the MAF housing towards the intake is going to remain stock?

So far this is my plan.
-.063" annealed aluminum with 2+ hard point attachments
-MAF housing through heat shield connection (no air gap) I would get an extra MAF to air box rubber gasket so on the other side of the heat shield it would be sealed. I noticed the other ones on the market just have an open slot so it's not really sealed off.
-Rubber seals (I don't know what the name is of the ones with the metal in them that you just pinch around the sheet metal so i may have to use epoxy

As soon as you get me some measurements I can start figuring out the angles and bends. I also need to know how extensive this intake is. Is it just a bolt on filter replacement that requires the airbox to be removed? Or a complete one from the T/B forward.
