Re: LY7 Upper manifold insulator (aka. more performance!!)

Heads are aluminum, so is the lower and upper intake.

I'm going to go on record saying that the spacer won't add any power, instead to prevent loss, the graph shown doesn't show you the redline though, it shows you MPH, you could be losing 10 or 15 horse at redline, but it doesn't show.

This motor stock makes it's peak power at 6K and then carries it through to redline, the fact that it shows it peaking at the end, leads me to believe that you aren't see the whole power band.

However, spacers will prevent a little bit of heat soak which can add a little bit of power, which is what your seeing throughout the power band. So for $80 its not the worst thing ever it's just that I would get it, if it didn't adversley affect the power curve so much top end like I suspect. It shows a significant gain for some odd reason only in a short span, this seems a little suspect, in any event, I seriously doubt that would add any real benefit, as that is likely in the torque converter's flash range anyways.

    Shrug...

Anytime you lengthen the runners coming from the plenum, you add more torque. This is mainly because the air charge speeds up in the process. This spacer is just too short to do achieve any measureable gains. As for it's ability to cool down the charge, again it won't be a measureable amount as the total thickness is not substantial. Back in the day when cars used a carb, it made more a difference due to the fact that the fuel was also stored in small amounts in the carb itself. Going to a full inch thick spacer on a carb., would also add another 200-500 rpms which was a nice way to cheat a low profile dual plenum intake.

Having the plenum and the intake extrude honed would make more power, but the process is not cheap. Also, making sure that the cast did not shift and thereby not having a match port to port is also another place where small amounts of power could be had.

That said, when I go to build an engine, I take advantage of all the tricks available, as all of them together usually pay off in one form or another. The most important thing to keep in mind when ever you're depending on making some extra power n/a, is to make sure that everything you do matches or compliments the other, otherwise you could end up with less.

        I know this.

        Whom are you responding to?

Re: LY7 Upper manifold insulator (aka. more performance!!)

After reading this series of posts from guys who put insulators on their Audi S4's (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=259045) it seems that the biggest difference people are seeing is that after the engine warms up, they aren't loosing power like would happen with a heat soaked manifold.

There are about 3 - 4 guys that installed them and posted back on there results. Not a single one was disappointed.

As one that rarely pushes the car when it's cold, I'm definitely anxious to see how this helps. At worst, try to think of it like the heat soak reduction kits. Not as much about adding huge torque and horsepower, but about making sure when the engine is idling waiting for that green light to drop, the power is still there because the air isn't heated as much. Besides, like GT-R said, it's about adding all the little things you do up that will make the difference in the long run.
