  • 3.9 engine.

    so im working on this project car and was thinkin bout getting a 3.9 v6 specs online say its 240hp 240tq. ive been tring to find a dyno result that you guys have for that engine but im not seeing any. my ultimate goal for this engine is 250whp all motor. so has anyone reach that here? if so what did you use? Im gonna be pickin up a long block on ebay so any engine work i wanna do out of the car.
    so can some one tell me what they dynod stock and with mod.
    thanks alot

    Re: 3.9 engine.

    Stock Dyno will get 210 each to the wheels. With mods, maybe 220/230. With just a ECM/TCM tune, intake and exhaust I'm gestimating I got 260hp/ft-lb at the flywheel. the 240hp 240ft-lb stock #'s you have are flywheel. Dyno results are rare.

    IMHO... the 3.9L is not a good project motor. We've had people use the 3.5L from a V6/GT trim G6 in a Fiero and twin turbo it. Those are easy too since they are extemely close to the 3400 V6. The 3.9L is like the bastard child of the 3.4L.

    Another nice motor might be a LS4...

    or a 2.0L DI Turbocharged from a Cobalt or HHR. Those put out 260hp 260ft-lb stock. Those are nice as there are FWD and RWD variants that will work on whatever application you plan on.

    Appearance: Full LED Conversion, 6000L D3S HID Bulbs, Holden Rear and Front Embloms

        What's your project car?

        I'm not saying the 3.9L wouldn't be good to drop in.. just there might be better choices as there is almost NO AFTERMARKET for the 3.9L and no one has done anything to it really. All the 3.9L is in is the Chevy Impala, U-Body Minivans like Pontiac Montana, Chevy Uplander, and also the G6, and Malibu for 2006 MY only. No one mods a rental/minivan engine

          its a 93 probe gt (ford i know) i pretty much got it for free engine blew and my friend didnt want to tow it to the junkyard. so ive been wanting to to a hybrid project for a long time. only other v6 engines fwd that put out decent power is the 3.9, 3.6 07 eclipse gt motor with 268hp( but engines like 3k with 1.5k for trans) and the mazda6 with 220hp also expenive the 3.9 i found on ebay for like 600 for a long block just no accesorys.

          do you think that there will be parts for it in the future since the car is still fairly new?

            Re: 3.9 engine.

            I forgot to add some Monte Carlos have the 3.9L as well....

            LZ9 = Plain 3.9L that I have and that are in most 3.9L cars/minivans.

            LZ8 = 3.9L that has cylinder deactivation for fuel saving.

            LZD = 3.9L variant that's E85 flexfuel capable.

            LZG = 3.9L variant with cylinder deactivation AND E85 flexfuel capable.

            The 3.9L is dead in the water. The only car to still use it is the Chevy Impala. They have the plain LZ9 and LZG engines. The Impala itself, despite it's recent redesign/refresh, I don't think will be around any much longer as well. It's the sole remaining W Body car left.

              actually Joseph Upson swapped a 3.9l v6 (LZ9) into a fiero and twin turboed it. the 3.9 motor is just as ideal it will just require some extra work on your part. last i heard Joe was looking for a forged rod and piston combination that would get him around stock length.

                      the 3.6 makes 12 more hp/torque i believe. and yes the bore on the 3.9 is similar to lsx engines. like i said Joesph found a few off shelf forged pistons that should work.

                        Ooof I got it mixed, the LZ9 and LX9 3.5L I always get mixed up

                        And the 3.6L gets more HP because it's DOHC while the 3.9L is a SOHC.. one of the last few engines made that weren't DOHC. The 3.9L has a lot in common with the LS series. Some said if it could be bored out a bit it would be a baby 6 cyl LS

                              nah this other guy said that you can't bore it out much. since you need to leave a certain amount between cylinders. you can size together on the shelf lsX pistons and it would be a lot cheaper than getting custom pistons made.
