Re: Transmission mount Inserts ... A rating

Okay: My review--and a bit more in-depth instructions for the 3.6's WARNING: this post will be long. Get yourself a snack.

Brand: RacingLine g6 sport inserts (Street-level, not the uer-hard ones)
Price: 20 bucks and Enduring a few friendly jibes about the bunny-toothed grill (Test vehicle)
          Purchased From: Racingline

Installation: Moderate, easier when you know what you're doing:

FRONT MOUNT: you'll need a slotted screwdriver--or an 11mm socket for the hose clamps, a 15mm standard or shallow socket, and an 18mm deep socket and an 18mm box-end wrench. Safety glasses recomended.

Start: Raise and safely support the vechile. Your best best is to raise the vehicle as high as you can--my recommendation is from the A-arm mounting points on the subframe. The more room the better. Remove the intake tube running parallel with your radiator using the slotted screwdriver or the 11mm socket (i believe that's the hex size). reach down and the top 2 15mm bolts, break them loose. Get under the car, and jack up the transmission along the gasket seam between the engine and the transmission housing. If anyone needs pics of this let me know. The jack should be securely supporting the transmission and lifted between 3 and 6mm--just enough to take the load off the mounts. The smaller the jack, the better. DO NOT JACK THE ENGINE BY THE OIL PAN! If the jack is fully extended, get a wood block so you have a bit of play.

Use the 15mm socket to break loose the lower 2 bolts. Change to the 18mm deep socket or the box-end wrench. if you are laying under the car with your head pointed to the rear of the car, the nut you want to loosen is on the right side of the mount (passenger's side), break it loose and remove the nut--the other end of the bolt has a locking mechanism on it, so it will not spin. Remove the bolt. The engine should not drop, if it does, jack the engine up a bit higher. Get above the car and remove the top 2 15mm bolts and then get nder and remove the bottom 2 15mm bolts. Lower the mount down.

INSTALLING THE INSERT: Apply your favorite lubing fluid to the mount. I don't know which ones won't work, but i've heard WD40, dish soap, but my personal favorite is ID Glide or KY Jelly. The fit for mine was really tight, so i just layed the mount on the ground, with the flat side of the insert up and inserted into the mount, and just stepped on it--the mount, after a bit of resistance, just popped in. wipe off excess lubricant from any seams and apply a bit to each face of the mount that mates with the center pin bolt.

To reinstall, get under the car and line up the mount and reinsert the center pin bolt from the left (if you're looking up with your head facing the rear of the car--driver's side). place 18mm nut ont to bolt to secure, but don't tighten. Install bottom 2 15mm bolts and secure, but don't tighten. Get up on top of the car and install and tighten the upper 2 15mm bolts. get underneath the car and tighten the lower 2 15mm bolts. Then tighten the 18mm nut. Congratulate yourself for the easy mount installation.

REAR MOUNT INSTALLATION: You'll need a tool to remove a standard automotive plug from a jack (needlenose pliers maybe), 18mm standard or low-profile socket, 18mm box/open end wrench, 15mm socket, 15mm boc/open end wrench, 13mm socket or socket driver (and possibly an offset 13mm box/open ended wrench), and if all possible, get a "stubby", or a short handled socket wrench. Safety glasses recommended.

Assuming your car is already raised, supported and the transmission is jacked up: if not, see the front mount instructions. you're going to want as much room as possibly while under the car. From the top of the car, remove the coolant reservoir from it's mounts. I believe it's 13mm bolts--taz, please confirm. make sure all connectrions are tight and "flop" it over so you have a hole looking down onto the mount. There will be 3 18mm bolts connecting to the transmission. one you'll want to get by "feel" from up above--the top one. Use the stubby 18mm socket ("stubby" from hereon out refers to using the stubby socket wrench with the appropriate socket) to loosen and remove this bolt. you might need to use the box end wrench to break the bolt loose. Get under the car and locate the 2-wire connector running into your rack and pinion. Remove this wire at the connection. You can do this without removing this if it's a pain, but you'll thank yourself later. Break loose and remove the middle and lower 18mm bolts and the center pin 18mm bolt. With the avaliable clearance, you'll likley have to use both the standard and stubby socket and the box end wrench to get them loose and out.

The "middle" 18mm bolt connection connects to a brace that goes toward the driver's side. Loosen the other side of the brace with a 15mm socket. You can remove, but just loosening it will help reinstallation. On the passenger's side of the mount, there is another bracing piece that is held to the engine by 1 13mm bolt and to the mount by 2 13mm bolts. Remove this brace. and bolts. The mount can now be grasped and removed by hooking your arm around the a-arm and through the wheel well and carefully maneuvering it out.

Install the insert as you did in the front mount. Make sure the faces of the mount are lubed--since it's going to be a bite in the ass to get back in.

Now comes the fun part. Note the position of how the mount has to be inserted. You're going to have to be deliberate at maneuvering it into the proper position because you will not have much room. Like removeal, go around the A-arm from below. Because this took so much trial and error (more error than not) to get it in, I can't say what the "best" way is. Just get some part of it in position to mount either the lower 18mm bolt or the center pin 18mm bolt. Secure, but don't tighten. If you get the lower 18mm bolt, then mount the center pin, Once you have the center pin secured, but not tighetned, mount the small brace that used the 13mm bolts. Again, secure, but don't tighten. Mount the middle 18mm bolt, secure, don't tighten. Tighten the other end of the brace for the middle bolt with the 15mm socket. At this point, re-insert the plug for the rack wire connector.

Get above the car and insert and tighten the upper 18mm bolt. Reinstall the Coolant reservoir and tighten the mounting nuts. Get under the car and tighten everything. Remove the jack from the transmission/engine, and safely lower the car.

Reinstall the intake tube--again, slotted screwdriver or 11mm socket.

Start the car and verify that the engine is secure in there. You should definitly feel a kick from the engine when starting, and there should be some idle vibrations that are noticeable, but not horrible (IMHO).

Installation Time: It took me about 5 hours, but seeing as i was pretty much flying blind, I can't see more than 3. The rear mount, for reinstalling, will take the bulk of the time. Just be patient and expect your hands to take a bit of a beating.

Any Installation Tips You Have: STUBBY SOCKET WRENCH. you may need someting to break the botls/nuts loose, but one you have them loose, this is an priceless tool. Checker/Schucks/Kragen has them for ~$10. 3/8" drive.

Quality of Part: 10/10. A bit tight on the insert, since i had to step on them to fit them into the mount, but i'd rather have them tight than loose.

Product Performance: 10/10: The vibes and noise inside of the car were acceptable to my g/f, and i could hear and feel the engine now--not overwhelming, but noticable again--which I personally prefer. Throttle response is definitly quicker, and i can feel the transmission shift a bit quicker and the shifts are more noticable under hard acceleration. In a bench test (read: unconfirmable), my first trip to and from Portland, the best average MPG over the whole trip was about 25.3mpg at an average of about 73mph. This weekend, on another trip with an additional passenger and a futon mattress in the back of the car, same criteria, I averaged about 27.2. Both cases cruise control was set and mpg readings set from the DIC. Weather may have been an issue, since the weather and wind were calm the second trip with, and without, on the first trip, it was raining, cooler, and wind was varied but could have been a factor.

An additional bonus point was, last night, trying to get around a slow mormon (minivan, j/k), i layed into her at WOT getting on the freeway to the speed limit, and the sound was lounder, richer, and even my g/f, who is not a car person, liked the sound and the seat-of-the-pants feel. Please note that I do have the GM Performance (Dealer-installed) exhaust for the LY7.

Would you Recommend to Others: abso-f-ing-lutely.

          Any Other Comments:
No decals or anything, but again, I got these reduced for being a test vehicle, and Skaưi is decal-free and will alwys be (no worries on that, Joe). Never noticed Torque steer with or without the mounts, so can't pontificate on that.

The vibrations I really only feel in the steering wheel, and then only when idling, or in 6th gear, under load (hills), at low speeds (45-55mph)

With respect to the engine flopping around, you can definitely feel that the engine is much sturdier. It doesn't lag behind the car when making quick moves, like whipping out to pass someone--as has been said.

Do I wish I got the racing series mounts instead of the sport: At this point, no. I find sport as yet is a good balance of power, keeps the sound down, and my g/f, who's ears are very sensitive and NOT deadened by years of loud goth, industiral, and metal music, can listen and hear it over the engine. I'll let someone else bet the testbed for racing mounts .

A+ job on these, joe. 3.6 people have their day as well...GET THEM!!!! I would have easily paid full price for them if someone else was the test bed.

Re: Transmission mount Inserts review thread.

Here's my review, put in this thread to keep things organized.

            Brand: Racingline Performance
            Price: $48 + Shipping
            Purchased From: http://www.racinglineperformance.com...roducts_id=153

            Installation: Moderate
            Installation Time: 30-45 minutes
Any Installation Tips You Have: Make sure you have some WD-40.

            Quality of Part: 10
            Product Performance: 9
Would you Recommend to Others: Yes

Any Other Comments: I have the street series on the 3.9 and they work perfectly. Installing the front mount is very easy, I actually did the entire thing from the bottom so I didn't have to remove anything from the top and that saved quite a bit of time. I had the front one done in about 10 minutes. The rear on the other hand was quite a bit of a pain in the ass, I was able to remove all the bolts except the main bolt that goes through the mount which I had to do from the top. I had to remove the coolant reservoir but other than that it went smoothly albeit timely. I had no problems installing with standard wrenches and sockets, there was enough room that I was able to get at all the bolts easily. To install the insert into the mount just spray WD-40 and coat both the insert and mount, once you do that they slide in very easily.

Now there is indeed more vibration present, mostly in the steering wheel and pedals. You get used to it quickly but it is noticeable, so I am happy I didn't go with the harder set. Performance is great, the feel is much more tactile now and the response from the engine is greatly improved. The engine feels much more responsive to your foot to put it simply. Since you only feel it in the steering wheel and pedals I don't mind it, but my wife doesn't like the feel of it when she drives it lol. But over time it should settle down, but we both agreed you get used to it very quickly. There seems to be some drone which Taz talked about when you are cruising along at lower speeds, but I don't feel it's a big deal. I noticed it but once you do it's not something you'll probably focus on from then on as it's pretty minor.

Re: Transmission mount Inserts review thread.

the most vibration is when your under 1000rpms... the lower the rpms the deeper the sound of the vibration. i honestly dont feel anything apart from the steering wheel and pedals except at start up

Re: Transmission mount Inserts review thread.

I notice it anywhere under 3000 rpm, but at or near idle yeah it's where it's most noticeable. There are also times when you let off the gas at highway speeds you notice it, but the added response is well worth it.

I also didn't notice anything really until the rear mount was installed, so perhaps you could use the rock hard one for the front and softer for the rear.

agreed, i put the front mount in, started the car....nothing

put the rear one in, started it and it rocked haha

but when i revved it with the front one in i was told there was much less end rock
