  • Illumination Wire (re-discussed)

A while back, someone was talking about the fact that the aftermarket kits do not have an illumination wire. The stock radio does in fact run off the can bus technology, however, there is still a wire you can use as your illumination wire, I tested the dimmer, and it works (ill really put it to the test tomorrow when I hook up my new AVIC-D3 Nav Unit.

Anyway, I took out the dimmer switch and noticed there are 4 wires, Purple, Turqoise, Black, and Grey (lighter shade). The light grey wire I tested is the one for the dimmer, so I Decided to take my Stock Deck Back out and noticed there is a grey wire exactly like it in the climate control harness. I tested it with my multimeter and sure enough, it was the one that dimmed the lights for the climate controls (I have the manual controls, not sure what it looks like for the auto control)

Thats just some food for thought in case anyone wants to try it. I am surely going to try this when I hook up my nav unit tomorrow.

yea I hooked it up to my Metra kit. It dims the LCD screen fine.

My deck has a light sensor and dims automatically when it gets dark..

I noticed on my Metra kit, if the brightness level is set to high on the Metra, the dimmer switch won't dim it.. if I set the brightness on the metra to anything other than high, the dimmer switch will dim it.
