  • Factory Amp

I noticed a slight 'hissing' noise from my monsoon system in my 2008 G6 with everything stock. Wasn't too bad so I was able to ignore it at low volumes and couldn't even hear it at high volumes. I just replaced my HU with a Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD and I love the HU. Bought all the BS PAC wiring harness/kits to make everything work properly. However, due to the increased output from the new HU the hissing sounds louder that is coming from the amp.

I believe it is the amp but I have no guarantee. I went to multiple audio places and made a few phone calls to places and everyone told me it was the amp. I had 2 places tell me that just buying an aftermarket amp for the G6 wasn't an option (which I dont understand). I've seen other people complain about this hiss, and I dont believe it is my speakers b/c when I turn them up to listening volume they sound great. The biggest issue here is watching DVD's which need to be turned up a little louder which increases the noise to a non-tolerable level.

My question is......do you think this is the amp? and can it be replaced (fairly easily) ?

go to the dealership get the factory amp replaced under warranty, you cant just put an aftermarket amp on your factory speakers, i mean you can but u will most certainly end up blowing the speakers from overpowering them, the dealership may tell you that the radio change voids your warranty dont listen to them, it is against the moss-magnusson warranty act, be sure to tell them that the noise started while you had the factory radio installed still

        Re: Factory Amp

yea when I went to a few of the local audio places they told me that it was a "GM" thing

IDK if I believe that or not, but you would think if they could they'd want my money and try to sell me something.

Crimson I agree with what you said which I initially stated why it got worse which makes sense to me.

ChromeG6, would it be worth it to maybe place the factory HU back in and take it to the dealership just to avoid any arguments over me replacing the HU? The only advantage I have taking it in with the new HU is that its louder now and I can put a DVD in and clearly show that theres an overwhelming 'fiss/fuzz' noise coming from the speakers. Is there some documentation somewhere that I could take into the dealership with me? So I have some ammo when I tell them it WASN'T a problem with my new HU?

it's happening with my system as well. My idea was to remove the Monsoon amp and throw in another higher powered one which will run the components.

Can't you just remove the factory monsoon and run the speakers off of the head unit??

If you have a headunit in there.. it will hiss. You head unit probally has a small amp in it.. like anywhere from 100-200watt total. That goes to the Monsoon amp and is reamplified... and thats why. Given if it happened with the stock headunit.. thats not too uncommon either. The monsoon amp sucks. I was contemplating replacing it with a real amp. and the speakers at the same time if i ever had gotten a headunit in the G6.

This is true with music but when I play DVD's they seem to be at a lower volume so I turn the volume up to say maybe 12-14 and you can noticeably hear the fuzziness. Where with music like 7-8 is very loud and the annoying hiss is gone.

yeah i gotcha. in my 6 when i had a phone call (bluetooth enabled head unit) the voice over phone was LOUD AS HELL and there was a hiss. i would say u could prolly just eliminate the amp completely as u have an aftermarket headunit which has pre-amps anyways. so u dont really even need it.

Really, I can eliminate the amp? how would I go about doing that? And I dont know much about the specs on the speakers in the car but I didn't think that the HU would have enough power to push them all. That definitely sounds like a great option if thats do-able.

to be quite honest i dont know if its possible or not as far as whats back there. yes ur head unit can push the speakers im about 98% sure of that. as far as what it looks like at the amp and if u can just eliminate it completely...that im not sure of. maybe check head unit settings if u can shut the pre-amps down?

                        Re: Factory Amp

Okay so I've done some more lookin around now that I was given some ideas. I saw some people posted about similar issues but no one really had a resolution. The threads just kinda died.

Looks like I have 2 options though, replace the amp or bypass the amp.

I think I'd like to replace the amp as opposed to doing some 'sketchy' wiring inside my car to by-pass the amp.

Who knows of a good replacement amp to use with the factory speakers (and possibly some after-market ones one day?) I have been looking around at amps online and I don't quite understand how the crossover works with the lows and highs. I know that theres 2 woofers, and two tweeters in the front and back.

Thanks for the help guys. I've looked around this site a lot and this is the first thing I can't seem to find a solution for.

you can put the stock back in if you dont want to deal with the hassle they give you but when i went in for my antenna module i simply said "you know that your are breaking the law by telling me this right, and if you still want to refuse i will need it in writing on company letterhead so that my attorney can further pursue the matter according to the moss-magnusson warranty act of 1975" and the manager looked at me swallowed the lump in his throat and asked me for my keys

IF you were to splice the rca cables could you just put bass blockers on the tweeters to prevent them from blowing or will that not work?
