hey looking at getting a dyno tune done...but just curious to know what kind of gains i might be lookin at...only got performance muffler and intake...i know headers would complete the trio but OBX is a no go...is a dyno gonna give me some nice HP gains?, is it gonna kill my MPG? and is it worth it for a price around $350-$400....

I think that if you are going to pay for a tune that you should get it done on a dyno.

i could only imagine that because it can be tuned for your specific car you would see more gains than a canned tune...

when you looking to do this?

It really depends on how good you tuner is. It should wake the car up a little though. Headers and a full exhaust would be a good idea.

well the LY7 is the GTP 3.6

HP Tuners does support our LZ4 motor so if they have HP Tuners you may have to purchase credits....

Let me know how it turns out...

Those OBX headers wont fit an 07+ anyway so.... The LZ4 and LZ9 have no headers available at all right now.

ps. this is the GTO performance mod area, not G6

If you have a good tunner then its well worth the 400 atlongest there also tunning your TCM/ tranny. Again this is if hes a good tunner, you prob see around 10-14 Wheel HP gain and another 8-10 lbs of torque to the wheels. So 17 flywheel HP and like 12 Flywheel torque pick up. When retunning your PCM should be going to 91-93 octane and thats only way you will see those gains if he is tunning for 87 its a waste. Now retunning for 91-93 octane he will incress your timming and A/F ratio numbers and see prob a solid 1 mpg pick up maybe even 2. if you lose MPG its because your now lead footed :P or he tunned it wrong.

My 3.9L went from 18.5 originally to 20.5 on average

So what did I miss on the OBX headers? I know they're hit & miss sometimes, what's the scoop?

didnt miss anything about the headers... he has an LZ4 motor and there are no headers that will fit our motors at this time.

The OBX fit the LX9

yes. remember a gt is no different than the regular v6 minus gearing.

is there any reason why hp would be lower after a dyno tune....did the guy f it up???

steelgraygtp

It makes 219 hp at the crank stock. Your dyno results are going to show wheel horsepower. Figure about 15-20% less than the crank.

only the truest of the true champions don't know the difference between crank and wheel horsepower.

you'll probably make around 200 to the wheels.

good?? bad???

Just wow @ everyone who's giving crank numbers as if that has anything to do with what you'll get on the dyno. No way you're going to be anywhere close to 219 on the dyno without some way serious work done :willy:

FWIW, as a very rough guide, some guys in clubgp who dyno'ed their cars stock found about an 18% loss between wheel and crank numbers, so your 189 & 202 would translate to approx. 230 & 246 at the crank.

Well he kinda did ask what the car makes stock, and seeing as how he didn't ask for whp giving crank numbers was the correct response wasn't it.

no one here has done a base dyno pull so we don't know what drivetrain loss our cars have.

Well yes, if you didn't see the part about how he was going for a DYNO tune, and was posting from the DYNO shop

and this means what? he should have known about drivetrain loss and done some math in his head.

Crank numbers are the only ones that don't change. Depending on the dyno and the day you could have very different numbers. There is no way he could make 200 WHP stock. That's what the 3.6 GTPs put out.

DroptopDiamond
05-01-2010, 03:39 PM
Well obviously we just have to agree to disagree - I would have told him stock would be about 180 (219*.82), not told him 219 and said his numbers were slow when he posted 189

Good point. I know the guy personally and he knows his shit. I doubt he made your car slower. How does it feel to you when you drive it? I actually just got back from his shop. I didnt know you were going so early.

my car is actually 182whp / 202torque....it def pulls alot harder when flooring and the shifts are smooth and faster...i felt great while drivin but i was just like wtf when i saw 219hp...ally, the dude def knew his shit...he's been in a few gm mags and supposed had the fastest g8 in the country at one time...not sure if it still stands...i went earlt cause wasn't sure how crazy it be there on a sat...was there at 10 and left around 1...they did three pulls on my car...can't wait to take it to the track and compare it to how it was last year...i'd be happy as hell if i hit 14's....i wanna race coolman just to see how it is against a almost stock gxp

Yeah he once had a turbo Trailblazer SS and then got the G8. I'm glad you notice a difference. We usually get stuck at the shop for hours when we go there so you were smart to go early! Enjoy your tune. :woot:
