      Re: adespain's progression!

So I spent a couple hours today installing these bad boys in my ride:

(Shout out to midnightLS for getting these to me. They sound amazing!)

I started out by following the how-to on here to remove the rear deck. It was amazingly helpful and the pictures there make everything easy. Just remember it's still sort of a pain to get it all out, and if anyone wants any hints or help on it, just give me a shout.

Anywho, when you get out the speakers they look like this (these are the monsoon speakers):

As you can see, the tweeter is sort of "floating" above the woofer. they are screwed into the rear deck together.
Hint: I had to use a short stubby screwdriver to get the stock speaker out since the rear window is so close to the speaker.

Next I decided to use the stock harness, since the speakers I have (infinity kappas) had the 4 connectors like the stockers. I just had to separate the tweeter from the woofer and then clip the wires and use a hammer to gently remove the clip thing from the speaker as shown:
      from this:

      to this:

It is difficult to remove by hand because the metal piece it is slipped on to is serrated:

Next I clipped the wires from the crossover that came with the new speakers because they had connectors made for the speakers. I used some male and female connectors to attach the wires together. It was super easy, much more so than soldering them together. This is what the final product looks like once connected together:

The positive and negative wires for the woofer are labeled on the stock speaker, so those are easy to match, but the tweeters aren't. The one with the white stripe was positive and the all black wire was negative for me.

After this was done I just screwed these new speakers in and clipped it into the harness, and BAM! Instant better sound.
Sadly, I didn't take a final pic of what they look like installed before the rear deck was back on because the neighbor kids next to my parent's were harassing me.

I hope this helps someone in the future! Now, to install my MMIs.

The speaker install looks great!! Which infinitys are those? I have been looking online at infinities alot lately and have been thinking about getting a set. Is that little infinity box in the one pic a amp or something? (Component Setup???)

I have the 693.7i (the old version of the new 693.9i).
The grey thing in the box is one of the crossovers. Yes, they are a component setup. It made it super easy to install with the monsoon amp. I just clipped the wires from the crossover and connected them to the stock wire harness. Worked like a charm.

                  Re: adespain's progression!

Very neat thanks for the pics. My last two cars the first thing I did was gut the sound system and replace it with my own. But so far I have been pretty pleased with the Monsoon system.

I know this is a silly question and it will be hard to answer but how much better than stock do these sound? Also I have heard Kappas highs are ear piercingly high is that accurate or not?

I have been thinking about doing this for awhile now. So you just did away with the crossover, and everything looks and sounds great? Do they sound better than stock? How is the bass compared to stock, seeing as those serve as the subs on the stock setup. I'm not going to put a whole system in my car, I'm just looking for some direct replacements that will sound alot better. (Direct replacement other than the wiring aspect of it)

To answer both of these questions, Yes they do sound better than stock. However, it is not as dramatic as a "night and day" difference. The sound quality is much better and it is noticeable. I was surprised at how good the monsoon system actually was to start with, too.
Yes, I did just do away with the crossover. It's done at the amp already, so it's not needed (however I kept them so when I finally save up enough money to redo the whole system, I can keep using these speakers).

The highs were quite high when I first tried them out, but i realized the button for the treble boost was pushed in. When I turned it off the sound was much better.
The quality of materials is worlds ahead of stock, and I'm sure these speakers will last quite a long time.

timhullet- The bass is slightly better than stock, as I feel that it represents the bass more accurately. If you are looking for adequate bass for some bumpin' beats, you need a sub. If you've ever had one, then you'll understand how much better the sub is than using just 6x9s.

Overall, this was definitely worth the effort and money.

If anyone is interested in doing sound deadening (like dynamat, second skin, fatmat, etc) I would do it on the top part of the rear deck while you have the cover off. It's pretty flat and would be much easier than doing it underneath through the trunk. I'm going to do this soon, as I found out how much that piece of metal actually moves when testing out the speakers before I put everything back together.

Thanks for answering my questions..... I'm not looking for a bumping system i would just like it to sound decent going down the highway, and not like I'm listening to a set of headphones or something crappy. Did you do anything with the door speakers in your car?

                          Re: adespain's progression!

I see, so it's more of a quality difference. It would be a more clear and accurate speaker. I was only curious because going from stock to aftermarket in my Honda I was blown away by the difference. That's the only reason I have waited on doing the 6 because I wasn't sure if the difference was worth it.
