    Re: Clunking in steering

Well the noise came back after 4 months...again. There is no permanant fix yet for this defect and looks like GM cannot come up with one after all these years. I will have to live with it I guess after my warranty expires in 2 years. This is BS.

at this time the shaft is just a temp fix too since there hasnt beemn a design change yet

          Re: Clunking in steering

Took my 6'er in for this issue and they said they retorqued the axles. Worked for three months now the clunking noise is back. Going to try and take it in and get it fixed even though my car is no longer under warranty. Should be able to work on it since the issue was looked at while it was under warranty.

But.... if its only a lube job... why not DIY?

They use some kind of grease spray.

Or we can source a sealed bearing to use there....
Other than the 6.. what other cars have the same problem, time to hit the juknyard and see that noisy bearing and find a replacement.

                Re: Clunking in steering

Just took her to the dealer to ask about the clunking again, the previous TSBs didn't seem to do the trick.

My clunking seems to be a bit different though, and to reproduce it, when the engine's running, hold your foot on the brake, then swivel the steering wheel from centre left and right at a small angle. You can hear the knocking and feel it on the brake pedal. Also there's some slight travel in my steering wheel if you tug it up and down a bit. Possibly that's the cause why I occasionally feel my steering have a "clunk" when turning, and only sometimes.

The guy said's it abnormal and told me to bring it back on weekdays.

                  Re: Clunking in steering

Went in today and they replaced the "steering shaft":

                  25962603 SHAFT KIT 065260

                  Is this the new one?

And actually I'm still feeling a very slight clunk, but my loose steering is gone, doesn't feel wobbly anymore. They tightened my whole steering for that.

                    Re: Clunking in steering

Does anyone have any info on this TSB or know where I can find it? Like the reference number. The idiots at the dealership that I went to (3 of them) say they don't have a clue of what I am talking about and say that there is nothing they can do about the noise.

I've now got what seems like the same sort of thing , so it's going to the dealer next week. I'll come back with a briefing on what happens.

I think I might have developed something like this too. Is it just like a little clunk when you turn? I seem to get it most when I first start driving.

                          Re: Clunking in steering

I notice it mostly at slower speeds, and only when turning the wheel to the right. It started about 2 weeks ago, only slightly noticeable, but it's getting more obvious now.

I got mine replaced 5 month ago for the 3rd time and this time, the tech guy said that there was an updated shaft. They replaced the I-shaft again, I haven't felt anything ever since.

I am on my second steering rack and will be on my third i-shaft soon when the dealer get the part. This is all replaced within the last 6000 miles of driving. That's how bad my steering failed. They said GM may not honor my warranty anymore unless the mechanic verifies the problem is legit and so far everytime the dealer confirmed that the problem did exist. I will let you know the part number for the i-shaft to see if it will be the same one or an updated version.
