My manual says 4 quarts with the filter, I always put in 4 quarts but have to usually pick up a 5th and top off a bit since the 4 alone doesn't quite do it.

Then what was available in 05? The picture posted is a picture of the engine in my 05 GT. The LX9 is also referred to as the 3.5L for the 05 and 06 G6s in every peice of literature I have found. My owners manual clearly states 4.5 qts and it takes every bit of 4.5 to get it to the full mark on the dipstick. Different oil pans for 05 and 06?

Disregard that, for some reason i thought this was the 3900 LZ9 thread. Must have been tired or something.

I'm not sure but I have to put about another half quart to get up to the full mark-usually I just run 4 quarts for a while till I can get back to the auto store. Maybe they gave me the wrong manual for my 06?

When in doubt go with the owner's manual.

                    3.5 L engine - 4 quarts, with filter.

^true it says 4 quarts with the filter but I prefill the filter then put in the rest of the 4 quarts and I always have to buy a 5th quart and put in about half of that go get the oil at an acceptable level

Go figure. My 3900 takes 4 quarts like it says in the manual and it's fine.

ya that was my problem, i was a lucky one and didnt get a manual with my car, looked it up on gm's website and the manual says 4 quarts, now my question is, since i have 4.5 quarts is that going to cause a problem, if so is there any way to siphon out some of the oil? thanks.

just check the dipstick, if it isn't above the line then no it won't be a problelm. like I said I put 4.5 quarts in mine everytime I do an oil change because 4 doesn't come anywhere near what it should be at
