  • **Spyder Halo Projector Headlight Retrofit**

Hey! I have another retrofit for you guys!

I found a pair of like-new Spyders with some bad bulbs and a couple wiring issues for a steal of a price.

Please visit my Eagle Eyes retrofit thread (http://www.g6performance.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=25014). There's some good stuff in there!

FYI: I do NOT grant anyone permission to use my pictures at free will. Please ask me for permission first. If I grant you permission, please put a reference to this post by using its link shown in your browser's URL bar and implement the proper credits to me. Thank you!

This post is open to discussion, but please don't start fights about personal opinions or anything senseless like that.

If you have any questions or picture requests (while I still have this housing open), please feel free to reply to this post and let me know.

    Anyway, onto the almighty Spyders!

    ----------------------------------------------------------//

First thing's first, gotta open them up! First thing you need to do is remove the weather strip on top of the housing.

Weirdly enough, it's not like any other G6 headlight. There are screws holding the strip there.

    Right screw

    Left screw

    The screws are taken out.

All you got to do is strip it off! It's attached by 3M adhesive or something.

Next, the metal clips around the bottom and right side of the housing need to be taken off. These are the inside clips.

    These are the bottom clips.

    ----------------------------------------------------------//

IMPORTANT: Make sure you take EVERY bulb out of the housing before you put it in the oven.

    ----------------------------------------------------------//

Get your housing ready to go into the oven.

    Preheat your oven to 250F.

Set your timer to 5 minutes.

Once the oven is preheated, put the housing in for 5 minutes. When time is up, work the housing apart and you'll have this.

You'll notice the two halves have a hard time separating. That's because the of the halo wires. Take the shrink tubing off of the wires.

Then pull them through their respective rubber grommets.

    The housing is completely separated!

    ----------------------------------------------------------//

There's for sure more to come. As always, feel free to ask questions and suggest ideas!

Hey there! Just got some more pictures for you!

    ----------------------------------------------------------//

The next thing I wanted to do was further disassemble the headlight. Here is a view of the back of the black-painted plastic piece.

    These are the halo wires.

To take the black-painted plastic piece out of the lens, there are two screws that need to be taken out. Here is the one beneath the high beam slot.

Here is the one beneath the blinker-ish sort of area.

    Screw out.

    Screw out.

Wiggle it out and it's ready to go!

To take both of the halos out, there are two screws on each that need to be taken out. Here are the halo screws behind the projector slot.

Here are the halo screws behind the high beam slot.

Here are the screws to take off the eyebrow.

    Low beam halo is out.

No wonder why the LED halos in these things are dim! They are two SMD LED's! Shameful...

    Both halos are out.

    Eyebrow is out.

It turns out the eyebrow is simply a long piece of plastic screwed in front of a strip of chrome. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but don't worry. I have an idea for improvement.

    ----------------------------------------------------------//

    More to come!

      More pictures of disassembly!

      ----------------------------------------------------------//

The next thing I needed to do was get the other half of the housing all stripped down. Here is the projector and high beam reflector.

To take the projector and high beam reflector out of the housing, you need to disconnect both of their respective ground wires. This is the projector with its ground wire disconnected.

This is the high beam reflector with its ground wire disconnected.

Also, make sure to pull out the wires by the high beam slot along with its rubber grommet.

The wiring is completely out of the housing.

To take out the projector and high beam reflector, you need to completely unscrew them from their aiming adjusters. Here are the projector's aiming adjusters.

      An 8mm socket fits perfectly.

After a bit of unscrewing, the projector is out.

Here are the high beam reflector's aiming adjusters.

An 8mm socket fits perfectly on these as well.

After a bit of unscrewing, the high beam reflector is out.

There she is all gutted out!

      ----------------------------------------------------------//

I found why the projectors that come in these have terrible output. Pictures of that are to come.

        Re: **Spyder Projector Headlight Retrofit**

Now here, ladies and gents, is why the projector that comes in these things have terrible output.

        ----------------------------------------------------------//

Here is a view of the projector from top-down.

Notice how close the halogen H1 bulb is to the cutoff shield. This is where length issues from HIDs come into play since they're a bit longer than halogen H1's.

        Another view

Here is the output using that halogen H1 bulb on a 9V battery, so that's why it's more yellow and dim than usual; however, notice that section where there's no light?

That's because the top of the reflector bowl is burned! Can anyone say cheap projector?!

Well, I took off that metal thing that was screwed to the cutoff shield to see if that would do anything. I've never seen it on any other projector and I can't think of what the purpose of it would be.

Here is the output with the same bulb and 9V battery with that metal piece out. It's already improved, but the spot that's vacant of light still remains due to the burned section of the reflector bowl. Also, that hole could easily be fixed with some JB Weld.

        ----------------------------------------------------------//

The moral of the story is don't buy Spyders to use long term unless you plan to replace the projectors down the road. The projectors absolutely suck in them; they were poorly designed and were made of cheap materials.

            Re: **Spyder Projector Headlight Retrofit**

Just an update for you all. There hasn't been any progress with the projectors or HIDs yet because they've just been ordered, but I think the following stuff is worth mentioning.

            ----------------------------------------------------------//

I felt obligated to replace the accessory LEDs on these things because most of them were burned out when I bought them. The LEDs I bought were a little too big for the slots.

            Another view

Do you see where the flat part is in these slots?

I had to dremel them out to make them fit.

            Woohoo, they fit!

I tried a 5x5050 SMD LED bulb in there, but I didn't like it that much.

Now, these Samsung LEDs are flipping bright!

Here's a shot one in each slot.

            From farther away...

To prep for the Morimotos, I had to take a few pieces of hardware out of the Spyder projectors: the ball joint (top left or right, depending on which projector is in question) and the adjusters (bottom).

            Ball joint

            Adjusters

To take the ball joint out, you need to push in both of its tabs at the same time and push. They're sorta-kinda visible here. It's a pain in the butt to do this, but please take your time. You don't want to break it.

To take the adjusters out, pinch the two legs together and push. This is extremely simple compared to getting the ball joint out.

Of course, do the same with the other adjuster.

            They're out!

            ----------------------------------------------------------//

At this point, I'm just waiting for the Morimotos to come in. It'll be another week or so before the DDM Tuning HIDs come in because I just ordered them today.

              Re: **Spyder Projector Headlight Retrofit**

Here's a little something for ya.

              ----------------------------------------------------------//

One of the little things that bothered me was the corner accessory bulb that came in these things, so I bought yellow 5x5050 SMD LED bulbs.

I like it more than the old bulb that was in there.

              ----------------------------------------------------------//

That wasn't much, but it was an improvement in my book. All the little things, all the little things...

What do you guys think of converting the useless plastic eyebrow to a fiber optic LED bar similar to shown in the image below? I was thinking of a yellow or white LED fiber optic bar.
