  • Another Front Speaker Monsoon Question

My 06 GTP coupe with monsoon audio system has a blown door speaker. I see that people have replaced these with component speakers and I had a question about that. Usually these come with a crossover and I assume that I don't need to use that, I just need to connect the tweater and the woofer to the cables that are there. Is that correct?

If the tweater is blown, Then yeah, replace also. Just keep in mind the watts that the system can handle. Just reusing the original wiring would be the first step.

You want to stay around same RMS and same impedence, using the old wiring is ideal and recommend if you don't want to do too much work aha. I'm going to be replacing mine but I am putting in JL Zr's so I'm going to be replacing my amp and wiring. That gets more time consuming :P

Re: Another Front Speaker Monsoon Question

Keep in mind that the Monsoon woofers are 2 ohm and the tweeters are 4 ohm.

With that in mind a lot of component sets or at least what I have dealt with tweeters were 8 ohm and woofers were 4 ohm so make sure you get the ohm rating stated above ^

Re: Another Front Speaker Monsoon Question

Hey, thanks all for the quick suggestions.

The tweeters are not blown so I guess I could potentially reuse those. A couple thoughts were "keep in mind the watts that the system can handle" and "stay around same RMS and same impedance". Those are a couple of the harder questions to answer. As there does not seem to be much information about those.

From what I can tell 2ohm speakers are becoming more and more scarce but from browsing the forums people have successfully used 4ohm with some reporting success and other reporting that it does not work well.

You shouldn't have any issues using higher impedance speakers. You'll just lose power output.

I believe you can wire the left front and rear speakers in parallel and the right front and right rear speakers in parallel and in effect you will reduce the impedance on each side from 4 ohms to 2 ohms. You will lose the fader control which in most cases is not a big deal.

You'll also lose high frequencies to the rear speakers.

Or if you find a dual 4 ohm voice could speaker you can wire it in parallel to get 2 ohms and then hook it up and it should work fine but those might be just as scarce lol I don't really know personally, if you want to keep it simple go to a junk yard and get a g6 or Malibu speaker :P

Re: Another Front Speaker Monsoon Question

It's been a while since I originally posted this and I meant to get a reply in before this but, unfortunately, the best laid plans don't always work out.

I did wind up completing this project by replacing both the woofers and the tweeters with a set of component Infinity Kappa 60.9cs speakers. I connected the speakers directly to the wiring that was already in the car without using the crossovers that came with the Infinities. The woofers fit using the adapter that came with the Infinities however, the tweeters, on the other hand, did not fit directly and I had to enlarge the hole that was already on the door. After some trial and error I found that the best way to enlarge the hole was to use a rotary tool (Dremel) with a sanding attachment.

The tweeters look nice and the entire set-up sounds better than it did before.

I appreciate everyone’s help in getting me the answers that I was looking for.

Re: Another Front Speaker Monsoon Question

I would like to replace my front door and 6x9's 06 g6 gtp coupe w/ monsoon system, keeping the OEM speaker wiring. Can I just replace the speakers and throw in a decent head unit without worry? I'm not looking to add a sub or new amp, I'm guessing I just have to keep within the same rms power as the stock? Are they any issues related with the stock monsoon amp?

It's hard, because the stock speakers are 2 ohm, not impossible and the stock amp isn't super powerful so pretty much any aftermarket speaker should handle the power buuuut, finding 2 ohm aftermarket speakers might be difficult, the head unit shouldn't matter. I can't help you too much as I'm a sq guy so I have swapped amps and ran new wiring in my old g6 and about to do it in my new one, but I do know it's a paint to stay stock but not impossible.

New to car audio, but I did take apart the trunk today and looked at the amp and where the wires run etc. Not sure if they make an aftermarket amp that would fit where the stock one is. I've never ran wires to setup an amp before, but would love to learn and give it a shot. Thanks.

It's not too too hard, but There's no amp to use the same brackets but you can get a small class D amp to fit in there it's just price points at this point. You have to first figure out what you want and what your willing to do, and then what you want to spend. Wiring isn't super hard but you would have to be prepared to spend about 3-5 hours and maybe more. Also depends on how critical you are. You need to wire a power wire from battery to your amp, and then you need to drill or locate a ground point. Then you need RCA's from your head unit to amp. And then speaker wire to speakers. Run it under the door panels on the ground. So many how to view are out there on YouTube to help you. Any specific questions you can shoot here. As for an amp, if you never wanna run a sub, a small 4 channel will do, if you do I would look into something like a JL XD 700/5, there small and compact, but clean and pack a punch. Plus will cover your speakers plus a subwoofer. And you could prob get one on Craigslist or something for $200- $250 however if that is out of your price range then look for a cheap 4 channel or maybe speakers that would be 2 ohm :P that match up to stock amp
