Holy crap another cold air intake thread oh no!

But anyway. Ive been searching around on here about home made intakes and ive come across some pretty good ideas. i like the pvc pipe idea, and its cheap but i feel its a little tacky. not hateing on the guys that have done it but id like to try something better for a home made intake.
Because i have access to a welder, ive been tossing around the idea of making one out of three inch mandrel bent exhaust pipe. im just a little concernd because of heat soak? i can make little adapters for hanging the intake because i know the metal will be heavier than the plastic. Has anyone had any experiance with useing exhaust pipe as an intake?
a shield is also something ive been looking into making along with it. anyone have the dimensions for making one? i would like to find a way to incorperate the maf sensor into the shield as well, to keep its temperature as low as possible.
Id like to also keep all plumbing in the same spot too. no relocating battery and fuse box to try to make a short ram intake. I would like to, however, ram some air from under the car into the shielded area to keep temps down. i saw that there was a thread where someone took what looked like dryer hose and snaked it up there. i may also make on out of metal so the air would flow easier.
if anyone has any other ideas please chime in. id like to try to make a very sufficient home made CAI.

ps, id love to have the crabs setup but i like making things myself, and im a bit stingy with my money haha

You won't have to worry about heat soak because the air is traveling so fast through the intake that it doesnt really have time to heat up. About the the shield I dont remember who but someone just took a piece of cardboard from a 24 pack and tested it and adjusted it until it fit then he took the same dimensions and made it out of metal. That always seemed like the best way to do it but that's just my opinion...

Lampoon made a "Tiger Crab" intake that was basically a cold air scoop under the bumper where the resonator normally is. Or as long as you are cutting and welding, you might be able to create a stealth scoop behind one of the grills.

I was the one (or at least one of the many) that used cardboard and shaped out a CAI! Starts mid way down page 14 and goes through to page 15 or 16 of my progression! Here is my progression: http://www.g6performance.com/forum/s...GT+Progression

trust me on this one.. there is a BIG difference between Stainless and Aluminum on the intake piping.. I've had both.. Stainless first and then Pooners FPU.. I wouldn't trade it..

Good info guys. Looks like i have a good reason to buy beer haha. This friday i plan on starting the little project...first by getting the shield done. Hopefully it wont take too long to make cause i was planning on starting the intake as well. Ive made a heat shield before but i had dimensions for it so it was a little easier. When i go make this one ill try to get the measurements for everything.

You could always ask for the dimensions to see if they still had it.

Also, when you do finish the measurements, any chance you could post them up? I'm trying to do the same for mine, but I was going to wait till it was cold just in case I can't finish it.

                  Re: Home Made CAI

ok so ive spent most of the day working on the shield. i like the idea of the crabs CAB, but i felt i could innovate a bit. i started with a pizza box and slowly made every piece to make sure i could get the most air tight as i could, meaning some of the gaps had to be sealed that lead hot air into the box.
this is what i started with...

^this is what icame up with after cutting up the box. and a mock of what its going to be like...

the custom intake i am going to make tomorrow will enter the box and be sealed. my ultimate goal was to make it completly sealed off from the heat, and for the only source of heat transfer was actually through the metal.

hopefully ill have another update tomorrow.

Neat. I hope you took the resonator out.
