  • Sonar Halo LED Projector Headlights: Review

    Good morning:

I recently purchased a pair of these from a private seller, used, for $150 (New from Tunersdepot.com is about $256) who was trying to offload a spare set. There are two variants--chrome bezel and black bezel. I opted for the Black bezel.

For overall part quality of what I got, I give it about a 7.5/10 for the used version that I received. Some components were missing, but nothing that couldn't be replaced without channelling my inner MacGuyver (as in it was fixed with a blowtorch and a paperclip).

For performance of product on the car, I give it an 8/10. Like most projector lights with Halogen bulbs (and this brand says xenon HID voids any waranntee), they are a bit dim, but at least to my eyes, not anywhere close to being undrivable...I can see just fine--and that's using generic bulbs--not Silverstars.

    Cons:
The lights use H1 bulbs for both high-beans and low (projector) beams. New might come with bulbs, but mine used didn't. The bulb type is stated on the back of the hoising, but is not easily apparent. Also, for adjusting the aim, the bolts to do so are on the back of the housing on the bottom, which for me meant that for adjustment, I had to unbolt the splashguard and get at them from underneath--rather than the hex-bolt on top for stockers. And as aforementioned, they, being halogen projectors, are a bit dimmer than stock.

    Pros:
As seen in this somewhat-blurry pic:

The biggest question to me is why the hell didn't these cars come with these? In my opinion, these look GREAT! This is coming from someone who is more about go than show. On a grey or black car, the black bezel really works. I'm sure other cars would look good with the black bezel as well, and white cars would rock the chrome bezel really well. Wiring the main lights is easy--just plug and play like replacing the whole lens assembly.

The LED accent lights under the turn signal and the halos are on different circuits that need to be wired into something (According to the GB thread, these lights are the same as the Spyder halos). In my case, for ease of use/install, I just wired them into the parking light circuit, so whenever the fogs, parking, low beam, or highbeam lights are on, the Halos and the LED's are on (and when just the DRL's and all lights are off, the halos/LED's are off). One could wire them to a separate circuit for better control, or even split out the circuit for independent control over the Halos/LED's respectively. My only caution on wiring independently would be to make sure that the circuit is not energized when the car is off.

Overall, I'm happy with the product. It looks great, was easy enough to put together and even though they are slightly dimmer than stock, I can see fine--especially for the price. Plus, unlike my stock lenses, these ones don't leak.

If the dimness is a big issue for you, I'd suggest saving up for something that does HID.

Those are Spyders lol. I am happy with my Spyders, I am planning on changing the projectors, might do them around x-mas time.
Just put some spacers to get rid of those circles, and yes you can use HIDS in them.

I think these companies just put whatever brand on them and they come from the same crappy factory.

Ricky: It looks like Sonars are Spyders, and vice-versa. I'm not sure who the real manufacturer is. Every picture I see of the Spyders look exactly the same as my Sonars, and the back of my housing has "Sonar" all over it. Thus, they either use the same blanks/tooling or one's a knock-off of the other.

If you do indeed make that modification for HID's, by all means make a write-up of it.

2006: According to the stickers on the back of my housing, it says you can't without voiding the warantee. I think I've already crossed that bridge, so if there was a way to do it without melting the housing or whatever, I'm sure you could.

Someone already did a cut off mod, but didn't replace the projector. Doesn't look hard:

Page 15 has the cut off mod.

Don't worry lots of guys that bought them are using HIDS 35w are okay.

          Any pics of the car?

Check the link I have in my original post. You should be able to access it and if not, let me know and I'll rectify the situation.

Thanks! Like I said...I don't see why GM didn't have these as OEM equipment--especially on the GTP/GXP I'l try to get better pics soon, those were just off my cellphone camera.

And thanks for the link--I may have to try that trick with the clips as the light bulb spacer, but like I said right now it's fine and I can still see even through the rain-soaked night.

I haven't hooked up the LEDs and halos on mine, I have the wiring for the HIDs ready, but I need to buy the new H1 hid bulbs. Maybe at the end of the month, first I need to buy new struts this week.

                  Here's a pic:

Ya know...I wasn't sure if the black bezels would work with red. In your pic it works well...probably becouse of the black grille.

As for the Halos/LED's, There are many ways to wire them, which I found a plus because for me, I just wired them into the parking light circuit; at least for now. Some think the LED's look "Rice" (I personally like it and think it gives it a finsihed look because ther'es only 3 LED's), and I've read on other sites they kep the halos and leave the LED's--in that way just leave the LED wires alone. Other I've read that they've connected the LED's and/or halos to cround, and ran the wires through the firewall inside of the car to a switch fused and linked to the ignition or other circuit that's only energized when the car is on. Personally, if I get the inclination, I'd do something similar but with a switch to selet none, Halos, LED's, or both. For now, I just want it to work and think it looks fine

If you want to go simple like I did and wire it into the parking lights, I'd just splice into the power/gound wires on the side marker lights on the lens harness itself and call it good.

Do you notice a loud clicking noise outside the car when the turn signals are on? I never noticed that noise when the original lights were on.

Nope. I remember I did go and check to see if the lights were wired up right for the halos/LED's and not wred intoi the turn signl circuit...no loud clicking here.
