  • cleaning the engine

Ok I just read the engine cleaning post and am somewhat confused (sorry). So I popped my hood the other day and noticed my engine area is super dirty. Maybe not super but its not clean.

When cleaning the engine do I need to cover anything up so water doesn't get in or on a certain component? Do I just take the hose and spray the whole engine area? Here are a few pics of how not clean it is.

Ok so maybe it is super dirty...

Some people suggest covering your alternator. At least try not to soak it when you're spraying it down.

Not sure if you read mine, but I did a step by step, with pics.
I don't cover anything on mine.
The only one I cover anything on is my Camaro, which has a carb'd engine.

                          Re: cleaning the engine

First thats only dust, a wet rag should do it.

If you want to spray water anyway, low pressure spray on a dead cold engine with some soap.
I dont recommend those engine cleaner sprays, they are too aggresive and may create spotting or dull the aluminum.

I use a mild dishwasher solution diluited in a water spray bottle. Work like a charm.

Will post pics on the weekend!!

Also, I just hate those plastic engine covers......an engine should be seen.... not coverred in some flimsy plastic!!

Woohoo Thanks for the replies and the help. I dont live on a dirt road but.....I haven't cleaned it ever since i've had the car. (April 07) But no I deliver pizzas and there are plenty and I mean plenty of dirt roads where I deliver on.
