Are they swappable with one that has a chrome overlay, or can I get a chrome overlay?

Several places make dash kits that include shifter plate overlays.

You bet they are. I swapped mine out for a leather wrapped chrome one.
Try a search...I know there are threads here that have pix too cause I posted them!!

Part number will be in the Parts Number area.

Put your car all the way down into 1st gear....as far back as it will go.
Turn off the car.

Take a pry tool and push down the lower chrome collar below your shifter handle. It just snaps into place.

Then look under there in the front and you will see a screw. Unscrew it.
This is why your handle needs to be back as far as it will go so you can get a screwdriver in there.

Be careful not to loose or drop that screw.

Once that is out your handle just pulls off. Straight up!

Drop on your new one and reverse procedure! Easy cheesy
