  • Calgary Peeps, I need you!

First thing: I'm going to be in Calgary on Tuesday night / Wednesday morning on business if anyone wants to get together (I may or may not have time).

Second thing: This business trip is to decide if I want to take over our Calgary location at the airport, so I may be moving there. I need to know EVERYTHING about Calgary by Tuesday of next week .

How hard is it to find a place to live there?
Average rental costs on a decent (not luxurious though) 1 bedroom place, preferably near the airport?
Places to go (relatively near the airport)?

Housing costs in Calgary are currently among the highest in Canada (I think only Vancouver is higher). The housing market went shitfaced crazy a few years ago and has finally started to slow down.

I think finding a place is easier now than it has been; not sure what the rental market is like though.

There's not a whole lot out by the airport. It's on the northern outskirts of the city. There is a massive Toyota dealership but I don't think you want to go there.

Also the Tim Horton's in the airport is almost always packed when I've gone, except at 10:30 at night.

I've never personally lived in calgary, but I know lots of people that do , and visit regularly.

It's actually a really nice clean city for the most part , it's suffering from the ridiculous amount of growth caused by the oil boom though. Rent is high , if you can even find a decent place. It's close to the mountains if you're into skiing/snowboarding. The hockey and football teams suck though , so you're probably better off cheering for Edmonton.

LOL ok so I won't get into the hockey talk as you know my thoughts on the lafs oh I mean the leafs....sooo I will talk about Calgary - I lived there for 5 years and loved it - if you move there you won't want to move back to Ontario- no skunks - that's my biggest and best reason I loved Calgary LOL - no need for Air Conditioning - the dry air makes it not seem as hot or as cold -chinooks are awesome - winter one day - chinook comes through and you are in your shorts - the thing I did miss was trees and rivers..but the beautiful mountains almost make up for it - it wasn't any more expensive there when I lived there but I hear it has gone nuts....should have kept our house would have been worth 3 times as much but oh well...you live and learn...

Um....I'm pretty sure you'll want A/C when it hits 30 or more above, regardless of the humidity. It does get close to 40 some days in the summer here, even if it's a dry heat that's pretty damn hot!

Yeah it's pretty expensive, but it's a pretty cool place. Too busy for me though.

$900 for rent? That's a bachelor's pad, right? That's right around the area that I was expecting that I'd need to pay, and it's really not much more than it is here.

I'm really hyped up for this. I hope that they don't come and take it away from me. The guy still has to interview 2 people when we're in Calgary on Tuesday/Wednesday next week.

The five years I lived there we never needed to use the AC once...what you call hot there is nothing without the humidity - unless the weather has drastically changed in 10 years - with global warming it would not surprise me but have you ever lived in Ontario? doesn't take much heat or cold to make you uncomfortable just due to the humidity
