  • Bye Bye Tranny?

I think my transmission may be going out.

There is a loud tappnig in first gear that gets faster as the gti goes faster. The tapping can be heard whenever the car is moving forward, however it is definetly loudest while in 1st.

One thing that confuses me is I think I can hear the tapping while in idle and not moving. Also, the car drives and shifts just fine. There is no difference in the feel of the clutch.

I guess it could be some moving part inside the engine that is banging around. I really have no idea when it comes to anything too technical.

tooth broke off of first and tore up everything inside.. $3200 for a rebuilt tranny instaled!!

I have mixed feelings about what to do. Part of me wants to cut my losses and buy a beater for $4k-$5k. Part of me wants to get a loan and buy a newer car.. though car payments suck.
If I keep the silver bullet I want to find a rear totaled parts car. Besides the transmission I have $2-$3k of other parts that need to be replaced.
There aren't a whole lot of VWs in pick-a-part though.

any of you guys ever put a tranny in yourself?

I had my car pretty taken apart to replace my own alternator. I've been told by a mechanic buddy of mine that it wouldn't be too much more difficult than that.

$2000 for labor is just nuts!!

I put a new tranny in my older vehicles but never touched a front wheel drive car.
