  • 3.6L Block heater installation.........Andy????

ok so since my 08 GT got totalled by a snow plow, i had to go home to MI and get my 09 GXP poor thing barely had 1k on her when i went to get her from home and now in 2 weeks has 5k on her anyways, i had to put a block heater in my GT since it didnt come with one, and of course the one for the 3.6 is VERY different and VERY expensive.......my gxp didnt come with one either and i never got one for it as i never intended to have to drive it in the winter anyways......well now that i have to driv it in montana in the winter i need one, went to the dealership as oreillys or napa dont have them listed for the 3.6 and the dealership wanted $280 just for the block heater and cord.......no the less that at least gave me the part numbers and diagram for it, so i ordered one from GM parts direct for $215 shipped, and my question is,

As far as i can tell from the diagram and pics of one installed in a 3.6 engine for sale, it just pops into a deep recessed hole and is held in place by a clip, no freeze plug or threaded plug like my 3.5 had watsoever, if thats all i have to do is pop it into place and run the cord looks like it will be the easiest block heater install ever, i unbolted the coolant tank and set it to the side, kneeled on the engine and i can feel the hole it goes in right below the back head right next to where the transmission bolts up........

just lookin for confirmation if anyone knows that is exactly how it installs........

Sorry for my ignorance but what exactly is the point of having a block heater? Is it just to help warm the block before you start the car on a cold morning?

lol pretty much if its below zero out here i just leave it pluged in all the time......also if it gets really cold like -40 or -50 out here it keeps the coolant from freezing and spliting your block open............

gas engines can start a lot "easier" at really cold temps but it not very good for them.......the heater keeps the coolant warm, and some what helps keep the oil warmer and thiner so everything cranks over easier, and for instance if i have it pluged in and its 10 below i can start the car and its already registering on the temp guage imediately LOL

the diesel trucks on the other hand at least the ones we use for work if its colder than like 20 above they begin having trouble started and if its below zero and they arent pluged in they are gonna start at all LOL

its sposed to be 20 below all this week, a few weeks ago right after i wrecked my GT they called off work cuz it was 40 below and no one could even get their personal cars started except one person lol they didnt plug them in LOL hell the piece of shit aveo they gave me for a rental wouldnt even start pluged in but my GT started when it was -55f out here just before christmas just fine pluged in LOL

sure wish it would get warm out here again.....last monday it was 60 degrees and i wash/waxed my GXP then after that it hasnt been warmer than 20 since......i wanna put my headers on sooooo bad, and i need to put my clear paint protection kit on before my baby gets any more rock chips than she already hase but can put it on unless its at least 40 since its clear vinyl and goes on like tint.....gotta get it on soon or it will be useless after the front end gets all chiped up and repainting wont do any good b/c you have to wait 6 months for the paint to cure so by the time the paint cured itd be all rock chiped up again anyways......grrrrr i hate montana in the winter, sure wish i had a job closer to home LOL

thats just how the weather is in MT, ND, WY, SD etc the week before christmas it didnt get any warmer than 47 below and the coldest it got was -59.......with the windchill i think it was something like -82f

that week probably half the cars at the dealership had the blocks crack wide open.......lol

well i guess with these cars its always gotta be something in the way.......the block heater got dropped off at our company shop today so i decided id make a quick 5min job of it before i started my car............WRONG went to stick it in the hole and shove it in and was hitting on something that was causeing it to go in at an angle shine the flashlight down there and it of course just HAS to be hitting on the transmission mount............FML so im gonna wait till thurday to install it i guess it still wont be too bad but i wish i didnt have to mess with the back motor mount lol it was bad enough putting in the MMIs a few weeks after i got the car....... so update and ill try to do a how-to on thursday
