  • Clear Coat chipping off

Ok so my front bumper has been beatin with rocks and junk over the last few years. The paint is still on the bumper but the clear coat looks like its chipping away and I just wanted to know if I could just go to a local store and pick up some clear and just spray it on and would that temporarily fix the problem of it chippins some more. Eventually Im gonna have the whole thing repainted but I don't have that kind of money right now. So Im hopefull just looking at temp fixing it for now till I get some dolla bills in my pocket. So what do ya guys think?

Here is a couple of pics.

So I know they are bad and I know I need to get my bumper repainted but I just need a temp fix for now.

I wanna say your best bet would be to water sand with fine sand paper 10000 (IDK just a thought) and spay some rattle can CC if you dont have the funds to have someone spray it with actual CC. Just my .02

Thats kind of what I was thinking to smooth out a bit. Its not really bad but when you get up close you can tell so I would like to kinda fix it.

The problem that I have here is that after is snows the city likes to put a crap load of gravel down and then really cool people spin their tires in the gravel spitting rocks up at everyone. Unfortunatly where I park Im usually in a prime location for "cool" people who want to spin their tires can shoot rocks at my car. If I ever caught someone doin this.... well I don't know what I would do cause I get mad even thinking about it.

          IDIOTS!!!

But yeah... do what I suggested... IDK what grit for sure though so you might wanna try a couple on a spot before doing the whole bumper...

Go to a shop (auto body specialties) and ask them what grit. (I wanna say it was 8000) But what we did on a buddies jeep was we taped off a square around the area, wet sanded that entire area, then resprayed the entire area with clear!! To be truly honest, that is exactly what a shop will do!! (Buddies dad is a body repair specialist)

                  Re: Clear Coat chipping off

Ok so Ive been checkin this stuff out online and this is what it says:

It says I should use 1200 to 2000 grit paper, dip the paper often and mist the area being worked on often, once its smoothed out apply a fine rubbing compound to bring back the shine of the paint, then finally once all dirt and dust and crap is cleaned off then apply the CC.

Now does that sound like the right process? Im just trying to get into this whole body work thing for a new project car Im gonna try and start in the near future here. And I know nothing really about this stuff.

                    Re: Clear Coat chipping off

^sounds about right, 2000 grit paper should be fine but use quality paper like 3M stuff and not some junk from an auto store. Just grab a bucket, fill with water and throw a couple pieces of sandpaper in there. Let them soak for a few mins then start sanding slowly. Just dip your hand in the bucket and drop the water on the working area. It will take some time a lot of elbow grease but the end product should look great!

                      Re: Clear Coat chipping off

Once the clear is hardened you will need to wet sand again to make it look real good. There is a youtube vid that some dude did on how to wet sand

im kinda in the same boat. someone hit my car with a shopping cart and left 2 deep gouges. Now with the elements the paint has bubbled up. From a few feet away you cant even tell right now that its scratched but when the bubbled paint comes off im doomed.
