  • Stuck Caliper = HIGH brake pad wear and etched rotor

So about a month ago i noticed my brakes were squeaking really bad. So i took a look at only the passenger side figuring both driver and passenger sies should be wearing the same. well about 2 weeks later i noticed my brakes grinding BAD. well this past weekend me and my boyfriend and one of his friends all went down to atlantic city. since my bf drives a vette, and his friends car isnt very reliable we took mine down. well pulled into one of the casino lots and pointed out to my boyfriend what i had been trying to point out the past few weeks. we get out of the car, he looks at where the noise and vibrations were coming from (driver front) and sees that the caliper is smack up against the rotor and that the braking surface of the rotor has been chewed through by the brake pad's plate. needless to say, we came to the conclusion that the piston on the caliper was sticking. so i asked my mechanic friend if simply lubing it would do the trick, along with the obvious replacing the pad and rotor, and he said no the whole caliper would have to be replaced.

so i got back last night and started my search this afternoon. called a few junk yards and found a caliper with about 34k on it for only $25 bucks!! this was a steal compared to a lot of other junk yards. (they averaged between 50-100 and needed 2 days to get it in). well not only was it $25 but they had it in stock so i was able to pick it up the same day. not paying any attention to it when the guy put it in my trunk, but when i brought it over to my boyfirend's he noticed that it had brake pads on it. BRAND NEW PADS!! ok they have a little bit of rust on the braking surface but honestly after 1 or 2 good stops it will wear away.

i will be sure to take pictures when we replace everything on friday and i will post them up on here for reference. needless to say..the total cost for the repair/maintenance is going to be about $70. $25 for the caliper, $40 for the new rotor, and just a few bucks for a can of brake fluid. not bad considering dealer wanted $240 just for the caliper.

you realize you should do both rotors right and that you should put pads on both sides

Remember if "the" and "and" are spelled right its not a genuine Ahuhn post

my passenger side rotor is perfectly fine..and i am going to be replacing both sets of pads--the issues are only on the driver side

yeah but your gonna have rotor thickness differences and that can cause problems. plus if your putting pads on you should have it resurafaced anyway

SOB no wonder my girls car vibrates/shakes a lil when applying the brakes!!! I guess I'll have to get another $35 rotor!!! IDK rotor thickness would be an issue.

Re: Stuck Caliper = HIGH brake pad wear and etched rotor

                well think about it

if rotor1 is lets just say 2" thick and rotor2 is 1.5" thick, when you apply the brakes, they will want to stop when you hit the 2" mark, so what is the other one suppose to do with other .5???????????

vibration during braking could simply just be a warped rotor... not necessarily a stuck caliper. if she feels it in the brake pedal and depending on how bad it is, it could also be felt in the steering when braking.

the difference between a warped rotor and my problem is that my entire car vibrates and grinds when i hit the brakes. if its just simply warping you get a vibration mainly in the brake pedal.

Im sorry my post was OT to begin with... I was refering to what they said about replacing both rotors.... My girls car had a prob similar to yours and I replaced only 1 rotor and both sets of pads... the other rotor wasnt bad looking so I left it alone, now she has slight vibrating issues...

Re: Stuck Caliper = HIGH brake pad wear and etched rotor

i promised pictures of the aftermath of a stuck caliper...
                      so here goes

comparison of chewed up rotor vs new rotor

                      old rotor

brake pads...or what's left of them (in actuality just the pad brackets were remaining)

and whats worse is that i was heating up the brackets so much that they melted and re-solidified causing them to rainbow

Yeah, that would have sucked if they would have bonded with the rotors...
