  • Amplifier question

Hello everyone, havent been on here very much lately. Since the last time i posted i have done extensive modification to the audio part of my g6. I have two 12" SoloBaric L7 (4 ohms) wired in parallel, and an Infinity 611a (for those who dont know, its 2 channel) powering them. You can probably tell my amp probably woul never give my subs near enough power, but im not smart and i dont know what to look for.

like i said i have each L7's voice coils wired in parallel which makes them 2 ohm correct? on inifinity's site it says that amp puts out "657 watts RMS x 1 channel at 2 ohms". Does that mean each sub is getting 657 of the 750 RMS watts it needs, or both subs combined are getting 657 of the 1500 watt RMS they need collectivly?

The total output of the amp is divided among how many drivers you have connected to it, so in your case both subs are getting a total of 657 watts. Infinity amps (and many other good names) put out more than they specify, but nothing substantial. You're probably getting *close* to 800, so around 400 a peice.

well I have the same amp and I actually wondered this myself. The way infinity is with their amps its kind of weird, its like a mono-block but 2-channel. I dont like how NO WHERE in the book will it tell you if the power is split, or each terminal gets the 600 watts, I'll assume each terminal does... But anyways. You can take a volt meter to check exactly how much power the amp is out putting.

You take the watts x ohms, then square root your answer. So in our case, 657 x 2, square root is 36.24. < Thats the number you'll need to know you're getting 657 watts to each sub.

      Heres how you do it...

      1. go here, get the 0db 50hz tone
      http://www.realmofexcursion.com/downloads.htm, burn to a CD

      2. turn any boost settings, or eq setting to 0 or flat, turn bass boost or loudness features off.

      3. On the sub amp, turn the x-over all the way up, and the gain all the way down.

      4. Take a volt meter, hook it up to the terminals, + to +, - to -. Make sure its set to volts, and AC.

      5. Insert the CD with the 50hz tone, put it on repeat. Put CD player at 75% of its maximum volume.

      6. As the tone runs, slowly turn up the gain while watching the volt meter. When it reaches the volts you want (in your case roughly 36.24), you're set. You will now KNOW how many watts the sub is getting

I know it might seem like a lot, but it doesnt take long and its totally worth it IMO. I wish I had known about this before I took my system out of my truck, now I have to wait until its in my g6. After that you can re-adjust your x-overs and turn your bass boost settings back up.

You are right. I would say you are getting closer to 350 each but still. The amp might have 2 pair of speakere outputs but if it is a monoblock amp the you are still mono. Now if this is the case then you are running your system at 1 ohm. Which if I am not mistaken is below the impedence you should be with this amp. If it will even run expect to cook it quick. You might want to invest in some fans to try to keep it as cool as possible. Good luck with this stuff. I am not a solo fan but they can get pretty loud if done right.

your amp is only going to be running in 1 ohms if the subs are on the SAME terminal. If each sub is on its own terminal you're fine.

monoblock amp? So monoblock means one output chan. There might be 2 terminals but that is just for ease of instalation and for looks. I have had many a monoblock. Most recently 2 jl 1000/1's or 2 xtant x1001's and each has 2 sets but were mono. So as for an amp for you what are you looking to spend? A great map for the price would be something like a 1200 watt orion. plenty of power to run your system. They are also a great price. They are 1 ohm stable also. Now for me I would ba a jbl bpx 1100.1 I just installed a bpx 2200.2 in my truck and woah. Re run it to 4 ohm and trust you will be slamin. I think you will be at about 1140 rms but thart is way under rated. Oh and this is a 2 chan amp so it will be bridger. If you don't want to mess with the impedence then just hook it right on up stereo. You would be at about 550 - 600 rms per sub like that. There are several more amps that are out that will run ya but these are just a few i have used.

Any good name brand amp will work, Orion is good stuff but I prefer MTX as they've never failed on me. This is a touchy subject because everyone will plug their fav line of amps and brands so I'll tell you to just stick to good name brands and you'll be ok. Probably better to put your price range though, cause that will be easier to narrow it down.

750 for the pair just isn't enough.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Orion-2500d-amp-...QQcmdZViewItem This is the one to get if you really want them to move. But be gentle with the gains.

These are decent for the pricehttp://cgi.ebay.com/HIFONICS-GENERAT...QQcmdZViewItem

Good clean power at 4 ohmshttp://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-AMPLIFIER-BP...QQcmdZViewItem

I could go on and on but stick with name brands and you will be safe. I would put atleast 1k rms watts to the pair. And be sure to port those suckers.

If you put more power to them, I'd go with a sealed enclosure.
