  • Use Dexcool or not

Well, I have been reading all sorts of forums, specially the bob is the oil guy ones about this discussion.

Well, my car is due for a coolant change and frankly I have not an idea what to use.
I heard horror stories about dexcool but frankly I have no idea on what to use...

I am quite afraid to use dexcool but I want to check you guys first...

I plan to change it this weekend

    Any iinsights?

Do not use Dexcool, and you must flush out the old dexcool coolant before switching to the green stuff.

      Re: Use Dexcool or not

You should have no problem with dexcool if you do these things:

change it regularly, do not exceed the recommended change interval
do not mix with any other types of coolant
      keep the proper 50/50 mixture
      use clean distilled water

It is important that you follow the proper procedure with dexcool.

        Re: Use Dexcool or not

not a good idea since the dex has lubricants and such to keep the water pump healthy

and your already at 150k miles or 5 years with your car?

Remember if "the" and "and" are spelled right its not a genuine Ahuhn post

You must use dexcool, the green stuff could clog the rad and damage other things.

Ok honestly all these guys are plain wrong.

#1 EVERY other manufacturer runs the green stuff or another derrivative.

#2 Name the only coolant that has had class action lawsuits for sludging and damaging engine cooling components.

#3 I've done all those other precautions and tried reusing dexcool on my GTP, it failed and sludged within 10K miles again...

Look at your dexcool coolant, and see for yourself. Next look at your neighbors vehicle that runs the greens stuff, check his coolant resivior, and wipe your finger on the inside of the radiator under the radiator cap, note the lack of slimey sludge that is probably coking up your head and waterpump as we speak. The first mod I would do to any new GM, is flush the coolant twice, and run the green stuff.

NO!!! NO!! NO! no!!! no!! no!
Do NOT.. I repeat do NOT use dex flush that shit out of there. Dex destroys engines, it leaves films of shit in your radiator, hoses, overflow bottle, and LIM.

wow, i have had 0 problems running dex in my car, its still that orange color. so either you guys r doing something extremely wrong, or you r mixing somewhere along the line. cuz. im sure if it was such a huge problem like everyone is making it to be. GM would stop using it. all those photos posted look like they r not taken care of very good and they look like older motors back when they had a problem

If dexcool was all that bad GM wouldn't still be using it. All I've owned is GM cars and trucks and have never had a problem with it. There is going to be opinions going both way's but it's up to you. My 2 cents.

                        Re: Use Dexcool or not

i think those pictures are the exception, not the rule. i have heard a lot of people say to flush and run green coolant but i have never personally had a problem with Dex in the 4 GM cars i've had or the 2 dozen my parents have owned. i can't say the stuff doesn't cause problems, only that i have never experienced any personally...and i work on a lot of GM vehicles at work too.

i always thought it was 100k mile coolant? is it actually rated for 150k?

Had 5 gm's myself, my parents have had literally dozens others, we've NEVER had a car with a coolant sludge issue.

                            i recommend sticking with dexcool.

I'm not that knowledgable on whether to use Dexcool or not, but, my 3 year old, 83000 mile G6 still has normal (clean looking) coolant. I have had to top it off once though...

That being said, I would trust the guys more with the higher post counts. They typically have seen it all.

Ironic, yes, I only have 150 posts so, you may not want to listen to me either.
