Police agencies across the United States are chock full of Crown Victoria cruisers. In all, there are over 80,000 Crown Vics on patrol, but the generations-old cruiser is finally getting consigned to history within the next year. That leaves a huge opening to any company that has a suitable replacement, and an Australian company thinks it has what it takes. Melbourne's National Safety Agency is working on newer, safer and more efficient technology for large markets like the US, UK and Canada, and they have a very solid partner in Holden. Holden builds both the Commodore and the Pontiac G8, giving the NSA both left and right hand drive RWD vehicles with powerful engine options. The very capable GM models also adhere to safety and emissions standards in several high volume markets.

The NSA has built a Pontiac G8 police cruiser prototype for an upcoming meeting with the LAPD and the Association of Public Safety Communication Officials, with several police-specific technologies on-board, including a integrated computer mounted into the dash. The G8 will also employs safety technology to keep officers safer, while also reducing the considerable costs that go into retrofitting a vehicle for police duty. Thanks for the tip, Andrew!

Pretty neat. I actually see this possibly happening. A lot of PD's, including Connecticut State Police, have Dodge Chargers already. That's basically the only competition right now. However, the G8 is more like a built up crown while the Charger IMHO is more like a wagon, not a cruiser car. Looks neat.. we'll have to see how it turns out.

It's Ausi built now. What they need to do is in 2011/2012 if they can get this deal and sales pickup hopefully they can build them in North America, hopefully along with the Camaro, the only other Zeta vehicle. It would reduce costs for both the G8 and Camaro, having more vehicles made at a single plant, and it would be cheaper for GM as well as they won't have to import them.

          Re: Pontiac G8 Cruiser

well yea that would help alot. The camaro was developed with major help from holden, not so? so its kind of an aussie, but being built in the US made it American.

and for that g8 cruiser....there goes more resale value for the g8 and if it does become a cop car, that makes me want to get one even less

Yeah, it would be unfortunate in the fact that the general public would lose interest in it IMO

Although, GM having that would provide more security for them, and having that platform more readily available, cheaper would mean possibly more rwd cars in future (when market steadies)

It was engineered here in America and developed here. The underpinning Zeta platform however WAS developed in Aussyland.

                Re: Pontiac G8 Cruiser

So if Camaro and G8 would be produced in North America, G8 production would skyrocket if that became the main Police Cruiser, meaning the Zeta platform would become more readily available, cheaper, possibly leading to more development on that platform..

                  Re: Pontiac G8 Cruiser

Not necisarily. They would be sold in fleets to 3rd party's that would dress them up with the Police outfit. Fleet sales are bad for GM, as they finally just stopped selling fleets of cars to rental companys because it hurt the trade in value on cars, especially the G6 alone and cost people money and made their products useless and harder to sell new ones if so many older ones were on the market. Also fleet sales make them very little money as they are discounted heavily.

Look at why the Crown Vic is being shelved. It didnt net Ford much $ and was to much of a pain to keep up.

I dont want to violate any obligations here but I work for a rental company, and we did not participate with GM this year but Fleet sales were still available, and the discounts were not as great as some may think..

                      Re: Pontiac G8 Cruiser

I left the rental business long ago but back then the fleet cost were below dealer invoice. Every year we flooded the market with 1-2 years old cars. No wonder GM's resale value plummeted.

I think the Chrysler 300 makes a good police cruiser. The G8 looks nice but I don't want it to be a cop car. Otherwise it will be all over the roads and lost some exclusivity.

I'd like to see a G8 cruiser... Better then the crown vics. If they do it everyones gotta watch out for speeding up to see the "G8" on the highway to find out its a cop. Haven't they been using the impala's as well?
