  • Remote Start

I was looking at gmpartsdirect and found the auto start for a G6 3500 listed: GM PART # 17800737. Does anyone know what is required to add the factory remote start capability to a vehicle that did not come with it? I have searched google and the forums and found nothing.

The url for the accessory is here:

First, according to the owners manual, check and see if your remotes have a + on the back of them. If they do, you can get the dealership to install the remote start for you. This is the only known way of doing it with the OEM parts.

I personally would imagine it being a plug and play dealership install... dealership due to the fact that I'm sure some programming would be needed?!!? E2Helper would be the man to wait for a response from

P.S.- Theres already a thread on this someplace (dunno where) but Im not sure if the person who asked originally got it installed or not!

The dealership has to program the car to accept the new remotes.

I had mine done and it was not something that you could do yourself.

As I mentioned in another post, the tech had to call GM and get a code based on the number that came in the package just to install this.

It can ONLY be done at the dealership, as far as I am concerned.

You can replace your remote and reprogram it yourself, but adding the remote has to be done at the dealer. Like icecream said.

So how about we just leave it at, take it to the dealership !!

They put stickers all over the car as well - In the engine compartment, in the glovebox, even in the owners manual.

They didn't want anyone to miss the fact that the unit had been reprogrammed.

I am a little late to this thread and can only add a few things....

Correct that only a dealer can enable remote start for 2 reasons. The new remotes with remote start button in kit have to be programmed to receiver and then the BCM has to have remote start feature enabled which is a special programming procedure.

The kit will only work on 2006 model vehicles, the 2005s were not built "remote start ready". In fact, early 2006 model sedans also are not compatible either. As someone mentioned best thing to do is look at your existing remote for a "+" on back.

Those remote start enabled vehicles also have the required hood latch switch already on vehicle with all associated wiring. The receiver module in vehicles is also the upgraded part which has the extended range (200 ft instead of 40 ft).

I think the G6 was first model which began shipping "remote start ready" vehicles because the 2006 models came out so early last year.

I think it's for the benefit of the technicians. I know on my last car they asked me to disable my remote start whenever I brought it in for any work that involved the engine bay.

It would really suck to be working on a moving part and have the engine start.

But if it's GM installed, it shouldnt work with the hood open right?? Aftermarkets I can see not having that ability tho...

You are correct, hood being ajar is one of the disable criteria. I never heard about dealer asking to disable remote start - makes sense on an unknown aftermarket system though

I stopped by the Pontiac Dealer today and spoke with their pats department. They said they were not sure what came in the kit. Is the kit nothing more than two key fobs with the appropriate buttons????

Could I simply order two key fobs (with remote start) from ebay and have the dealer tell the vehicle to work with the new key fobs. I am not sure if the dealer would do this but is this the general idea of things?

Yes - The kit is nothing more than two new key fobs with one extra button each AND a little piece of paper that has a special number on it for that 'kit'.

If you buy two key fobs from eBay, once programmed, they will do EXACTLY what the key fobs you have today do - But you will have an extra, non-working button.

You have to buy the kit from GM (or at least from someone who obtained it from GM.)

There is also an instruction sheet in the packet that the service tech will use. Once they had that, it took about thirty minutes. The guy told me if he had to do another one, it would take about 10, but it was the first time he had seen this.

Kind of crazy.. All the equipment is there - You are just paying two hundred bucks for the extra two buttons on the key fobs.
