  • XM Radio added to Factory Unit...

    Hi all,

My name is Dan and I am a salesman at Mike Haggerty Pontiac in Oak Lawn IL. I ran into a small problem and my service/parts departments can't give me a straight answer. Can someone add XM radio onto the factory radio so the titles and artist can be displayed? Thank you very much for helping me and the G6 owner out.

    Hi Dan,

I'm not real sure on how to answer your question. It definately depends on what model G6 and what radio it has in it now. I'm sure you could replace the whole unit with one from a GTP with the XM built in.

Otherwise, the best thing might be to just get a XM reciever and hook it up separately. My guess would be that the XM can not be added to the factory radio so the songs and artists appear but if you get an XM reciever it would display them too.

I'm suprised that you service and parts department cant help on this.

DON'T GO TO HAGGERTY PONTIAC FOR SERVICE IF YOU LIVE IN IL. Just kidding.

By the way, my last name is Fontana too and I live in the Chicago area. Maybe we are related somehow!

Weird on the last name, well not really, the family is pretty large so we might be distant cousins. There is a Fontana Family party every year in Frankfort. Ever attend that?? If so, then yes we are related.

Back to the radio. Our parts told me that there are two six disc part numbers. One must be capable of displaying XM while the other will not. The sucky thing about the whole situation was that the customer bought the car with the promise of adding XM to the car in factory specs. We made a call and it was said it could be done, however the place later called and told us it could not be done. Now we have a customer who is a little peeved at us and we are trying to make it right. We could tell him to pound sand because nothing is in writing but we are not like that. The last resort will be to take like you said an XM ready one from a GTP or GT and install it into his car. (lots of money!) Either way, me being the aftermarket sales guy, I will take alittle heat for this. If anyone can think of something please toss me an idea.

Doubtful it would work unless the XM radio being added were actually factory equipment.

Perhaps of interest....there is no difference in the radio head for a vehicle that has XM radio. Same radio is used.

When you order XM factory option you get XM antenna on the roof and coax cable which runs to a separate XM receiver module located in rear of vehicle (location depends on model). There is also wiring to power up the receiver and audio circuits from it to radio head's auxiliary input.

This XM receiver module also communicates on the vehicles "low speed GMLAN" serial data bus. This is how the factory radio knows that XM receiver is present and how the title/artist information is transferred to the factory head for display.

So unless the XM equipment you were adding to the vehicle duplicated this communication method with factory radio it wouldn't work.

        EDIT:
The reason you see 2 types of 6-disc CD changers is that there is a different version for Canada market which has fewer English words on the buttons and more symbols. Option code is "SSG" I think. Other than those graphics differences it is the same part.

          First off.

Hey Dan, I bought my car from your dealership.

          Secondly,

Unless an aftermarket adapter is made, or the proper OEM equipment was obtained and installed, I doubt what you are looking to do is possible without switching the radio.

No, never been to a Fontana party in Frankfort. Looks like e2helper and EmersonHart13 answered the question on the radio for you though.

Do you drive a G6 Dan?

I drive a demo V6 premium value pkg G6. 21705msrp Well I actually sold it today and probably will take one of the last 06' Torrents until that sells.

To the radio, we are having a tech make a wiring harness to duplicate the factory hook ups and hook it all up. We shall see what happens.

Well in that case it should work. Wiring will need to be added to both the IP and Body harnesses. Most important of course is the audio circuits which are only wires in both harneses. Use shielded twisted wire like factory. Only need 1 GMLAN wire to the receiver, he would have to splice in somewhere to find it. No need to change the radio. Guess you would also be drilling holes in roof for antenna??

Ok this is the scoop. The tech had our parts department call GM for the XM brain box. Bad news is we have to get it from the Onstar people. They will not release one to us. They will not sell one to us. We called a GM Parts rep and he will be here tomm. He is telling us there is a proto-type going through trial periods right now, which will be a plug and play unit for people who want to do what I am trying to do. We took a used G6 GTP and took out the XM system and are currently tossing it into the car. I will update everyone on the car.

Nice to see a salesman who wants to help the customer after he already sold the car. Good for you Dan.

I see you might have run into another roadblock with this method

I forgot XM receiver stores VIN and so moving a used part like this results in theftlock condition for XM receiver and I don't know if dealer service tool has ability to relearn it to new vehicle

Yes, we have run into this problem. My service manager has talked to XM GM and the company that sources us with the box. Here is the current dilemma...

The box is currently in its "locked mode" which means it does not recognize the VIN of the car it is currently in. Good thing is the XM will cycle through all 170+ odd channels. It will not play them but it at least will switch between both XM bands and display each channels number. All we need to do now is source a new box. The problem is the company will not even sell us one. The reason you ask, because they are coming out with a plug and play unit for what we did in the next 6 months. Funny thing is we did what they said can't be done and they are trying to do. We did in 48 hours. (Our tech here is a genius and has worked overtime to see if he can do it. He is sick in the head, but a genius) Come Monday we have to call a boss over at GM and pretty much beg them for a new box programmed for this car. Again, a new update will be posted when I get more info.

                              About my service...
Almost, I said almost, all of our salesmen are like that here. Pretty down to earth guys here who will right something if it is wrong. I am actually not this persons salesman but since I passed along some bad info to the real salesman I am stepping up to right my wrong. I just hope the customer has enough patience to let me do that. He stopped in today and was no happy at all, but I showed him the car which is pretty much all ready to go minus the box and had him speak to both the tech and service manager who I give all the credit to on this.

If anyone has any questions ever on cars in stock or specs or upcoming info on cars coming out(READ GXP G6), please don't hesitate to ask me.
