  • Other synthetics besides Mobile 1?

Hey all, I'm due for an oil change, been running M1 for about a year and a half and I'm wondering if anyone is running a synthetic or blend other than mobile 1? I know it's good and all, but kinda pricey, and not really sure I need to pay premium for a Pontiac. I figure maybe Valvoline or castrol full synthetic or maybe a blend might be a more reasonable choice.

Valvoline or Castrol will probably run you about the same for an oil change or are you doing it yourself and getting a good deal?

AMSOIL is the best oil out there if you can find it

it costs more per quart but you only have to change it once a year! (9 bux a quart)

by far the best stuff though

I buy it by the Gal at the auto store, then have my mechanic change it. He charges $17 for the change, and like 8 for the filter. My first round was more expensive cause I had to buy 2 gallons, but since the 3.6 takes 5.5q, I only buy one gal now, cause I have some left over each time. Usually runs me about $20/gal. Only issue is my mech is an hour away. I change the oil when the DIC is usually less than 5%, but I've read that it's calibrated for synthetic only, so I could prob run it past 0.

Edit: I just pulled my reciept from the last change, and it's $10 for the labor, and $8 for the filter.

If price is a concern then go with a synthetic blend instead of full synthetic.

You should know that plain regular oil is good enough for our cars. I have never used a drop of synthetic oil in any of my cars and I never had an oil-related problem. Some of my cars have over 200k miles. Of course there is no denying synthetic oil is better, I just don't see the need for it.

2nd oil change I ever let someone do on my car.... out of Mobil 1 This was just 2 weeks ago. I have Syntec in it. Apears to be a equal synthectic by feel. No notice of anything diffrent from the engine or anything. I cant complain. I my go back to Syntec, i'll see how it goes as its a tad cheaper then Mobil 1

AMSOIL is a scam. Most of their products aren't even API licensed!

I think both Syntec and M1 are now considered group 3 oils, which arn't real syntheics, but highly refined mineral oil's. Not sure about Synpower. Hell, I wonder if I should just go back to convential oil, so I can get in on those oil change specials at the stores.

I never have ran conventional oil besides the original "break in" oil from the factory thats ussally a blend. Synthetic just has so many anti wear stuff built in though. On my 2006 F250 4.6L V8s at my company, on conventional I get an average 15.9. On synthetic they average 16.5 and thats on all 3 of them.

Mobile 1 used to be like $23 for 5 quarts at walmart now its $26. I saw Mobile 1 5000 for $11 at walmart, how is that stuff? I am confused now on what oil to use. Who is going to stick with the regular Mobile 1?

I'm also due for my first oil change on the Torrent and I was thinking:
When I had my G6 I ran 2 yrs with mineral oil and 18 months with synthetic and guess what... the DIC doesn't see a difference! I was making the same mileage between oil changes so what's the point?
Should I trust the DIC or the oil maker's recommendations? I know synthetic is better for startups in winter (lower viscosity) but what's better for me? I only do city mileage. is it worth the extra 25$ per oil change?

You wont see a diffrence in the DIC, the DIC is programed for conventional oil.

My GFs Torrent GXP we run Mobil 1 5w30.

IMO, the conventional oil change 3K miles regaurdless of DIC, maybe 5K if 80% or more all highway. Synthetic, every 5K miles I change mine.
