  • How-To Sound System Must, The big 3

I have been asked a couple time how to so this will save some time for everyone here. I kept the stock wires connected too just so I can take my big 3 out if need be. Like wattanty stuff.
    Pics will be added soon.

    1. Disconnect the battery

    2. Take that bastard out. Makes it easier

    3. Disconnect the power wire to the alt. It is connected by a nut and bolt. Undo the nut.

    4. Put the new wire through the origional boot covering the stock wire. You might have to do a little chopping but it will fit. Hook it back up. Both wires that is.

5.Run the wire your prefered rout keeping it off on moving or hot parts. Hook the wire to the conection that is at the fuse box colsest to the drivers/ street side of the car.

6.Now or the wire frm the fuse box to the battery. Unhook the wire from the fuse box to the battery from the box. It is the one that is closer to the engine or the passenger/ curb side of the car. Now measre your wires out put the terminal connectors on there and start hookin them up. I had to use another terminal post as my stock one was too small. Just a side note for ya.

7.Now for the ground. Just pick a spot you think looks solid and is the actual frame of the car. If you want to use a bigger wire than 4 That would be better but for most 4 is ok. Make sure when you find your spot you get a drimmel tool or something like that and clean all the crap off there. Bare metal is what you are looking for here. Now drill your hole for the bolt. Hook the wire up to the frame and make sure it is tight. A little no corosive greese is always a good idea just to make sure your wire and conection is not going to oxidize over time.

    8. Put your battery back in. If you need help figuring this out then you shouldn't be doing this mod. Hook her up. Now give her a test drive and see if the dimming is gone or less brutal.

Let me know if you need any help.

I'm still having a hard time trying to figure out what this how-to is for right here. It sounds similar to something I did to my alternator in my Cougar to fix dimming lights, and that was just moving some wires around and connecting them to each other on the alternator so it had a little more juice.

After market soundsystems pull more juice than your stock electrical system can handle. By doing this upgrade you get the maximumout of your stock componets and in many cases fix the dimming or voltage drops in your electrical system caused by the aftermarket equipment. You should do this first before you start putting money into worthless caps and bigger alts and batterys. This is cheaper and yeilds some of the best results.

this really works better than installing a higher output alternator? I know it's definitely cheaper.

It is sometyhing you should do first. Even with a high output alt if you have wires that can only pass 140 amps max and you have a 200 amp alt you could cook the wire or the alt. If you are unable to pass the current your alt will work twice as hard to try to compensate for the lack of flow. Our stock is the worst I have seen. It looks like a speaker wire. Horrible. The alt is your bread and butter to solidify your electrical but the wires are the first thing you should upgrade. Alot of times this will fix your issued. And your car will actually run better too. Alot of cars have voltage drop off under normal driving. Some import tuners actually sell upgraded grounding kits for tuner cars. Cheap and well worth it.

Yeah even if you don't have a system added you can still benefit from doing this. It can lower the overall resistance of your entire electrical system, and help stabilize the voltage throughout.

Any good quality audio/electrical cable will work. Use at least 4 awg.

I can't wrap my head around on how upgrading the ground cable under the the hood will help with dimming. Is not having a big ground from the amp to the car well enough?

it grounds out the rest of electrical system, which has an effect on all electrical sources..including that amp and radio and lights, etc
